OC 405 Partners, a joint venture of OHL USA and Astaldi Construction, has been selected by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to design and build the I-405 Improvement Project in the US.

OCTA in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation is widening the San Diego Freeway (I-405) between State Route 73 (SR-73) and Interstate 605 (I-605).

The $1.2bn project will involve the construction of the 405 Express Lanes in the centre of the freeway and the addition of one regular lane in each direction.

It will also include the reconstruction of 18 bridges and improvements to the freeway access and traffic on local streets.

The project will be financed with a combination of local, state and federal funds. Currently, OCTA is pursuing a federal TIFIA loan to fund a significant portion of the development.

OCTA’s CEO Darrell Johnson said: “The I-405 Improvement Project has been an unprecedented joint effort between OCTA, the California State Transportation Agency, Caltrans, the Federal Highway Administration, state legislators and local cities.

“After many years of hard work and dedication from multiple individuals and agencies, I am excited to see the start of the project’s design and construction.”

Construction work is set to commence in 2017 and be finished in 2023. When completed, the project will speed up travel times for about 370,000 daily drivers between Costa Mesa and the Los Angeles County line.
