Stantec, a professional services company, has announced the completion of construction on the $300m (£236.5m) New York Proton Therapy Center in East Harlem, New York City, US.

Said to be the first of its kind in the state, the Stantec-designed 135,000ft² facility offer advanced cancer care to patients in the Tri-State area.

The three-storey centre, which comprises four treatment rooms and one research room, is expected to treat 1,400 patients annually.

The centre is operated by a consortium of health care institutions including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Montefiore Health System, Mount Sinai Health System and ProHEALTH Proton Management.

New York Proton Center CEO Allan Freeman said: “The New York Proton Center recently finished construction and will open for patients within the next month. The center is designed for staff and patient efficiency and security, ease of movement throughout, and work-friendly spaces."

Stantec said that the centre will serve as the anchor of a mixed-use residential, commercial, and retail project on East 125th Street in East Harlem.

Murphy & McManus served as the project’s developer, while Gilbane Building Company was the general contractor.

Stantec principal Paula Williams said: “Proton therapy is at the cutting edge of cancer care, and with just 30 centers currently in operation across the United States, we see healthcare providers increasingly exploring the tremendous opportunity to bring this level of care to communities."

The project forms a part of the East 125th Street Development project, a New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)-led project intended to bring affordable housing to East Harlem.

New York City council member Diana Ayala said: “The New York Proton Center is the first of its kind in New York State and will offer cutting-edge treatment to both adults and children battling cancer.

"Its presence in East Harlem will render the neighborhood home to advanced, innovative cancer treatment – all while contributing to the transformation and revitalization of East 125th Street."
