Construction has commenced on the Creighton University’s nearly $100m (£80.1m) health sciences campus at Park Central in midtown Phoenix in the US.

Plaza Companies is the developer of the campus, while Okland Construction is the general contractor for the first phase of the health sciences building.

Butler Design Group is the architect and RDG Planning & Design is serving as the conceptual and tenant design and improvement architect for the campus.

Plaza Companies president & CEO Sharon Harper said: “We are very pleased to be working with Creighton University to make this exceptional medical facility a reality.

“The new building will help fill a critical need in the Arizona medical community and will be a tremendous asset to the Valley of the Sun.”

Being built along Central Avenue on the revamped Park Central property, the 180,000ft² building will accommodate nearly 900 students who seek degrees in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assistant programmes.

The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2021.

Creighton University president Daniel Hendrickson said: “Creighton University has strong ties to the Arizona medical community where more than 250 Creighton-trained physicians currently practice.

“We look forward to expanding our impact by educating many more exceptionally qualified health care professionals to serve the community moving forward.”

Plaza Companies is partnering with Tucson’s Holualoa Companies to redevelop the Park Central Mall, the city’s large-scale shopping mall.

The partners intend to convert the mall’s expansive space from a retail centre to an almost 500,000ft² bustling community hub.

The new Park Central will comprise 450,000ft² of Class A creative office and retail space for lease as well as exclusive tenant patios, on-site restaurants and amenities, a mid-century modern design, 15-25 foot ceilings, convenient bike path and light rail access, and ample parking.
