The joint venture of Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) and Swancor Renewables has commenced onshore construction on the NT$62.4bn ($2.05bn) Formosa 2 offshore wind farm located off the coast of Miaoli County, Taiwan.

Due to become one of the largest offshore wind farms in Taiwan, the 376MW Formosa 2 project will have the capacity to generate clean electricity enough to power over 380,000 households per year.

Taiwanese company Fortune Electric will manage the onshore construction of the project, including the construction of the onshore substation and cable system required to connect the project to the local electricity network.

Jan De Nul will be responsible for the foundations and submarine cable system whereas Siemens Gamesa will provide 47x8MW wind turbines for the offshore wind project. Offshore construction for the facility is scheduled to commence in spring 2020.

Formosa 2 project director and Macquarie’s GIG senior vice president Kimberly Cram said: "We are very pleased to announce the start of construction of Formosa 2 and to have the opportunity to celebrate with our construction partners, central and local government and local community representatives.

"Formosa 2 is a great example of how experienced local and international companies can work together in order to deliver world class energy projects and bring benefit to the local region."

As part of the project development, more than 70 contracts have been signed with local companies to date.

The Formosa 2 offshore wind farm will be located close to the site where Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm Formosa 1 is located, which consists of 22 turbines, with Phase 1 and Phase 2 combined.

The project is expected to contribute to Taiwanese authorities’ goal to generate 20% of its total power from renewable sources by 2025 and to reduce reliance on fossil fuel energy.

Recently, the UK Export Finance (UKEF) has approved NT$9.2bn ($296.3m) in funding to support the construction of the Formosa 2 offshore wind farm.
