Charlotte Douglas Airport begins work on $600m terminal lobby expansion project

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), a civil-military airport in North Carolina, US, has broken ground on a $600m project to expand the terminal lobby.

The Terminal Lobby Expansion project forms part of the Destination CLT programme, which will involve an overall investment of $2.5bn to $3.1bn through 2035.

The Destination CLT programme involves renovating the concourse and expansion of roadways, curb front, airfield and terminal.

City's Aviation Department, which owns and operates CLT, aviation director/CEO Brent Cagle said: “The Airport has been preparing for years to begin construction of the Terminal Lobby Expansion.

“We began in 2013 with the removal of the original Hourly Decks to build the new roadway and make room for the expansion. Now that we’ve broken ground, we’re excited to start a project that will go above and beyond modernizing the terminal.”

Designed by the Gresham Smith and DAS Architecture, the Terminal Lobby Expansion project involves 370,000ft² expansion, and a 150,000ft² canopy and two passenger skybridges to connect the curbside and existing rental car/hourly parking garage.

In addition to renovating the existing portions of the terminal lobby, the lobby expansion will add 175,000ft² of space to the airport for ticketing and baggage claim, security lanes, subterranean walkways access and basement level offices.

The plan also includes the construction of a central energy plant to offer mechanical space for the project.

Gresham Smith is serving as led architecture, interior design, experiential design and wayfinding, and commissioning for the Terminal Lobby Expansion, which is planned to be completed in six phases.

Cagle added: “We’re taking a 37-year-old building and converting it into a state-of-the-art facility that offers the latest amenities, stunning artwork, new concessions and nearly doubles the space in Ticketing and Baggage Claim.”

Planned to be completed in five and a half to six years, the Terminal Lobby Expansion aims to address the rapid growth at Charlotte Douglas.

CLT has already completed Concourse B renovations, East Terminal Expansion – The Plaza and the Airport’s upper and lower roadways, in 2019.
