Brazilian company Braskem and The Linde Group of Germany have selected Bilfinger Westcon as the lead mechanical subcontractor for Braskem’s polypropylene (PP) production line in the US.

Braskem has committed $675m for the design and construction of the Delta, the new production line, which is being constructed adjacent to the existing production facilities in La Porte, Texas.

The Linde Group is the lead EPC contractor for the Delta production line.

The initial steel erection phase is underway and the final phase of main construction is targeted for the first quarter of 2020.

The plant will have an annual production capacity of 450kt (kilotons).

Braskem North America CEO Mark Nikolich said: “With the recent milestone delivery of the reactors to the Delta site, Braskem and The Linde Group, as our lead EPC contractor, have appointed Bilfinger Westcon, a leading construction service provider to the chemical and specialty chemicals industries, as our lead mechanical subcontractor.

“This appointment keeps us on track for our original Delta project timeline and further supports our leadership position as the largest producer of polypropylene in the Americas.”

Bilfinger Westcon will be responsible for the installation of structural steel, piping, and industrial process equipment.

The Linde Group executive board member Christian Bruch said: “We are glad to see that construction of Braskem’s major Delta polypropylene project in La Porte is proceeding very well.

“With Bilfinger Westcon, Braskem and Linde have chosen a mechanical subcontractor with whom we have worked together successfully on the construction of several industrial plant projects.”

The new Delta line will increase the company’s production capacity of homopolymers, random copolymers, impact copolymers, and reactor TPOs.

Braskem’s current polypropylene plant in La Porte has annual production capacity of 354kt and will continue operations after the Delta line becomes operational.

The company also operates a UTEC Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) production plant at the La Porte site.

Nearly 1,000 development and construction workers are expected to be employed during the construction of the Delta production line.
