Bechtel wins EPC contract for $1.3bn Ohio energy facility

Bechtel, an EPC and project management company based in the US, has been selected by South Field Energy to design and build a $1.3bn, 1,182MW combined-cycle facility in Columbiana County, Ohio.

The South Field project is expected to provide clean, reliable and efficient energy to more than one million homes.

The company has received approval to begin construction on the South Field Energy facility. Nearly 1,000 jobs are expected to be created during the peak construction phase.

The facility is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2021.

Bechtel global Infrastructure business operations manager Kelvin Sims said: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to deliver cleaner, reliable energy to the Columbiana, Ohio community.

“Our experience in delivering combined-cycle facilities along with our continued collaboration with Advanced Power will ensure that this project reflects the best of innovation.”

Bechtel will take up the engineering, procurement and construction of the facility.

The combined-cycle power facility will use GE power generation equipment, including two natural gas turbines, each paired with a heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine generator.

Bechtel Enterprises is developing the project in partnership with Advanced Power.

This is the second major project in Ohio for the Bechtel-Advanced Power team, which completed the Carroll County Energy Facility in December 2017.

The team is also constructing the Cricket Valley Energy Center, a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power facility in Dover, New York.

Advanced Power CEO Thomas Spang said: “We are proud to have developed the South Field Energy facility, our second major project in Ohio. The project will create jobs and bring significant economic benefits to the Village of Wellsville, Columbiana County, and the State.”

Bechtel has so far completed more than 25,000 projects across 160 countries. It operates through four global businesses: Infrastructure; Nuclear, Security and Environmental; Oil, Gas and Chemicals; and Mining and Metals.
