Bechtel, ENKA to build Morava Corridor Motorway Project in Serbia

The Government of Serbia has selected a joint venture of Bechtel and ENKA to design and build Morava Corridor Motorway Project in the country.

The 112km dual carriageway motorway, with a design speed of 130kmph, connects communities and businesses from Pojate in the east to Preljina in the west and links the country’s North-South motorway to the Hungarian and North Macedonian borders.

The scope of the project includes the construction of 78 bridges, 24 overpasses, 12 underpasses, over 20 million m³ excavation, more than 17 million m³ earth fill, 490,000m³ concrete, 1.7 million m³ sub-base, 1.1million ton asphalt and 460km guardrail.

Furthermore, the team will construct a flood defence system to protect the areas around the motorway from flooding, erosion and subsequent water pollution.

The project also includes 10 new interchanges, structures crossing highways, railways and Morava river along the route, high embankment fills with extensive embankment scour protection works and long river diversions, dykes and construction of new river bed due to the wide flood plain of West Morava River.

Construction of the motorway is scheduled to begin in early 2020 and each section of the motorway will be completed within 2.5 years with the total construction period of four years.

The motorway is a part of a wider regional transport plan to improve trade links throughout the Balkans and build economic ties to Western Europe. It will connect with Corridors X and XI, which run to Austria and Greece by way of Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Italy and Romania by way of Montenegro.

A telecommunication corridor will be constructed beneath the side of the motorway to allow for future 5G fibre and tower installations.

Previously, the joint venture of ENKA and Bechtel has delivered infrastructure projects in Balkans since the 1990s, as well as motorways in Albania, Croatia, Kosovo, Turkey and Romania.

The partnership has also constructed over 28,000km of highways and roads along with engineering structures such as 100 tunnels, 26 bridges and viaducts.
