BAM Construction has been selected as a preferred contractor by the UK-based property developer Commercial Estates Group (CEG) for the first phase of £350m South Bank regeneration scheme in Leeds, UK.
Subject to singing a contract, BAM’s work will include a 38,000ft² development on Globe Road in the city centre, comprising office space with ground floor break-out space, retail and leisure.
BAM said it will commence building the first 38,000ft² striking office development at Globe Point in early 2020.
Globe Point is located in a new district in Leeds city centre, south of the River Aire, called Temple, which forms part of the South Bank Regeneration Area adjacent to Leeds trains station.
BAM said in a statement: “Temple will bring back to life weave and texture as a recognition of this area of the city’s legacy of wool and flax spinning, weaving and tailoring, particularly as the Water Lane site housed John Marshall’s (king of the flax industry) first two Mills in this area of Holbeck in the eighteenth century.”
The second phase, which has detailed planning permission, will comprise 138,168ft² space with ground floor retail and leisure.
BAM Construction North East director John Phillips said: “This is an imaginative and bold scheme and any contractor would be excited to be involved with it. It’s great to see the regenerative ambition and for us, as a historic contractor, the respect shown to the region’s industrial past is inspiring.
“BAM is all about building considerately and using our opportunity to enhance lives and we will bring our modern attitudes and technical capabilities to the table and look forward to working with our partners.”
CEG is partnering with architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios to masterplan the Temple.
Separately, Bam is working on projects including remodelling of the Yorkshire Playhouse, and on two schemes for the University of Leeds.
