Construction firm Balfour Beatty has been selected by the Highland Park Independent School District (HPISD) to serve as the district’s construction partner in a $110M elementary construction and renovation project in Texas, US.

The project — designed by Stantec — includes the construction of four new elementary schools and the renovation of a fifth elementary school.

Balfour Beatty is currently managing the construction of a 9,290sq m campus, which will be the district’s first new elementary school since 1948.

The new facility — to be located on a 4.6-acre site — will comprise flexible learning spaces, outdoor classrooms, a learning garden and one-storey underground garage with 90 parking spaces.

Once the first school is completed in mid-2017, the firm will start the demolition and construction of replacement campuses for the three remaining schools. Each building is set to be completed in 13 months.

Additionally, the district’s fifth elementary school will be renovated to add an extra 734sq m of space.

To deliver the project, Balfour Beatty will implement new technologies, including BIM and BIM 360 Field, and lean construction methods such as pull planning and integrated-team alignment.

The first phase of the project is currently in progress.
