Balfour Beatty has signed a $780m (£643.2 m) construction agreement with Matthews Southwest to deliver the Broward County Convention Center expansion project and add a new four-diamond Headquarters Hotel in Fort Lauderdale in Florida, US.

The $900m (£720.9m) project involves the addition of more than 525,000ft² of meeting space to the Broward County Convention Center and an 800-room, four-diamond Omni Hotel on the property.

With enabling projects underway, the project is expected to significantly increase meetings, convention and exhibition capacity of Broward County.

Upon completion, the expanded convention centre will feature more than 1.2m ft² of event space, including 350,000ft² of contiguous exhibition space, a new 65,000ft² waterfront ballroom, new dining concepts, improved water taxi access as well as an iconic waterfront plaza with public access.

Located on the destination’s Intracoastal Waterway with a view of the Atlantic Ocean, the new 29-storey Omni Hotel will comprise 73,000ft² of meeting and ballroom space.

It will also feature multiple restaurant options, including a rooftop bar, an 11,000ft², full-service spa and fitness centre, and over 30,000ft² of pool decks.

Balfour Beatty Florida buildings operations president Scott Skidelsky said: “Matthews Southwest is an expert in developing large-scale real estate projects that leave legacies of excellence for their clients and the communities they serve.

“We’ve had the privilege of serving as Matthews Southwest’s construction partner on world-class projects in the past, including the Omni convention center hotel in Dallas and a significant residential high-rise development in Miami, so we’re particularly honored to once again be their partner in delivering this significant project for Broward County.”

Matthews Southwest is the developer of the project and Stantec is the lead design architect. Fentress is the convention centre expansion architect, while Nunzio Marc DeSantis serves as a hotel architect.

Enabling projects and site work will continue through the spring of 2020. Construction on the project is planned to be completed in the spring of 2023.
