UK-based infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has secured a £90m ($100.1m) contract to deliver onshore civils works in the UK for the Viking Link Interconnector Project.

National Grid, a UK-based electricity and gas utility firm and Energinet, a Danish operator of electricity and natural gas company, have selected Balfour Beatty for the civil works contract for the project.

Under the four-year contract, Balfour Beatty will be responsible for providing civil engineering services and installation of 68km of cabling across Lincolnshire and linking Denmark to Great Britain at Bicker Fen substation of National Grid.

Viking Link is a 1400MW direct current (DC) electricity link between the British and Danish transmission systems linking Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire and Revsing substation in southern Jutland, Denmark.

Upon completion, the Viking Link Interconnector Project will form part of the 765km Viking Link which will supply power for 1.4 million households in Great Britain and is expected to improve the security of electricity supply in both countries.

Additionally, the Viking Link project is expected to contribute to the UK Government’s carbon reduction commitment to decrease all greenhouse emissions to net zero by 2050, by providing access to a low cost renewable energy market.

National Grid Ventures Viking Link project director Mike Elmer said: “This contract is a major milestone in the next part of the project.
“We’re pleased to be working with Balfour Beatty, who will deliver the onshore cable installation section of the Viking Link Interconnector between landfall site at Sandilands and the Converter Station at Bicker Fen.

“Viking Link will enable Great Britain to import and export electricity; provide a secure supply of affordable electricity and play a vital role in helping to decarbonise the UK’s power supply on our journey to a net zero carbon energy system.”

The work on the project is expected to begin in January 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.
