Italian construction firm Astaldi, as part of a joint venture (JV), has won a contract to upgrade the Frontieră-Curtici-Simeria railway line, named Lot 3, in Romania.

The contract, worth approximately €600M, has been awarded by CFR SA, the Romanian National Railways Company, to the Astaldi, FCC and Convensa JV.

The scope of the contract includes the rehabilitation of nearly 40km in the section between Gurasada and Simeria, with the construction of 17 bridges, electrification, the installation of the ERTMS signalling and telecommunications system, the renovation of eight railway stations and some minor works.

Construction work will last for three years, and is scheduled to commence after the signature of the contract, which is expected to take place by June 2017.

The project will be financed by the EU in the context of the POIM programme for the modernisation of the Railway Corridor IV Curtici-Brasov-Constanta.
