US-based technology firm Apple has broken ground on $1bn campus in Austin, Texas for the production of its all-new Mac Pro devices.

The three million ft² facility forms part of the company’s major expansion of operations in Texas, and to increase investment in manufacturing, engineering and other jobs across the country.

To be located less than a mile from the existing facilities, the new campus will initially accommodate 5,000 employees and will increase the number to 15,000. The facility is scheduled to be opened in 2022.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “Building the Mac Pro, Apple’s most powerful device ever, in Austin is both a point of pride and a testament to the enduring power of American ingenuity.

“With the construction of our new campus in Austin now underway, Apple is deepening our close bond with the city and the talented and diverse workforce that calls it home.

“Responsible for 2.4 million American jobs and counting, Apple is eager to write our next chapter here and to keep contributing to America’s innovation story.”

The tech firm said that it is on the right path to achieve its 2018 goal to contribute $350bn between 2018 and 2023 to the US economy and generate employment for an additional 20,000 people across the country.

Unveiled at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference in June 2019, the all-new Mac Pro units are currently in production in Austin. The units are planned for shipping soon to customers in the US.

Apple, which already employs approximately 7,000 people in Austin, plans to power the new facility with renewable sources.

About 60% of the campus will be covered with a landscape including a 50-acre nature and wildlife preserve that is planned to be open to the public.

Last year, Apple said it plans to establish new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, expand in cities, including Pittsburgh, New York and Boulder, Colorado, over the next three years, and explore the potential for expansion in other places in the future.
