American Campus Communities has inaugurated the new Academic and Residential Complex on the campus of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

The new complex includes a 54,000ft², two-storey academic building along with a 146,000ft², 10-storey residence hall with 548 beds. It is located near the UIC-Halsted Blue Line CTA stop at Harrison and Morgan streets.

The $100m (£80m) facility was built as part of public-private partnership with American Campus Communities.

With ground breaking held in January 2018, the project was financed mainly through tax-exempt bond issuance with Collegiate Housing Foundation, serving as the borrower and the owner of the project and it was designed by Chicago-based SCB architects.

UIC chancellor Michael Amiridis said: “This new complex serves as a beacon that illuminates UIC’s growth and burgeoning role as Chicago’s leader in higher education, workforce development and intellectual thought.

“By thinking creatively and utilizing a public-private partnership, we are able to provide a much-needed complex for our students with state-of-the-art amenities to enhance their learning experience in the heart of a world-class city.”

Constructed on an a former four-acre parking lot, the facility offers 83,000ft² of residential space in traditional two-person dorm rooms along with semi-suite style units.

Additionally, the building has 16,000ft² of shared spaces, including study and social lounges on each floor and includes a fitness centre, laundry facility and a sky lounge on the 10th-floor. It will also include 1,600ft² of retail area where a student-operated and managed Starbucks is located.

Associate professor of biological science Paul Malchow, who was a faculty advisor involved in the design process noted that the building was developed with a vision to create spaces to foster more student-faculty interaction both in and out of the classroom. The classrooms will promote ‘active learning strategies’ that will help students working in groups.

American Campus Communities public-private partnerships executive vice president Jamie Wilhelm said: “At American Campus Communities, we believe every student should love where they live.

“Thanks to our new and lasting partnership with UIC, we are thrilled to provide this purpose-built, living-learning accommodation to UIC students and the city of Chicago, and we welcome the opportunity to deliver the best possible living experience when we open our doors next month and for many years to come.”
