Alstom -Bombardier consortium wins contract to supply 44 metro trains in France


Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP have selected a consortium of Alstom and Bombardier to supply 44 metros for the Île-de-France region.

Under the €530m ($583.8m) contract, the consortiums will design and manufacture the metro trains for Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP. The contract also includes an option for the delivery of 410 trains. The contract amount will be equally shared by Alstom and Bombardier.

Scheduled to begin operations between 2024 and 2026, the first 44 trains will be installed on 3bis, 7bis and 10 Paris metro lines. Later, options will be exercised to equip five other lines that include 13, 12, 3, 8 and 7.

Under the contract, the two companies will deliver 30 five-car trains for line 10, while 14 four-car trains will be built for lines 7bis and 3bis which will be 60.86m long.

The features of the trains include a driver's cabin, an open interior circulation equipped with modern passenger information systems, large bay windows and themed, 100% LED lighting.

To offer a pleasant, safe travel experience, the trains will also feature a heating and air conditioning system, USB sockets for charging mobile devices, and video protection cameras.

Alstom said that the new trains will be eco-designed to make them 98% recoverable at the end of their lifespan.

With 100% electric braking and 100% LED lighting features, they are expected to consume 20% less energy compared to the MF77 trains which are currently in service.

The company said that the new trains are expected to reduce maintenance costs by 15% compared to the MF01.

Alstom’s site at Valenciennes and Bombardier’s site at Crespin will assemble the complete trains.

A total of about 2,300 people at Alstom and Bombardier, including 700 engineers are expected to work on the project.
