Allen Contracting wins $105m contract for next phase of US road project

Oklahoma City-based Allen Contracting has secured a $105m contract from the Oklahoma Transportation Commission for the next phase of the I-235/US-77 corridor widening and reconstruction at the I-44 interchange.

The project represents the first four-level interchange constructed by Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) on the state highway system.

The earlier phase was worth $88m and was completed in early November 2018 and work on the next phase will begin in 2019.

Under the project, I-235/US-77 will be converted to six lanes, and auxiliary lanes will be constructed at the I-44 interchange.

Work on I-235 will take place between N. 50th St and NW 63rd St. Around 100,000 vehicles a day travel on I-235 and a similar number uses I-44 in this area.

Eleven bridges will be constructed or reconstructed within the mile-long work zone to widen the interchange, including new flyover ramps from northbound I-235/US-77 to westbound I-44 and from eastbound I-44 to northbound US-77/Broadway Ext.

I-235/US-77 will be closed for up to four full weekends and the I-44 will be closed at the interchange for one weekend to remove bridges and to hang beams for new bridges over I-44.

Temporary lane closures on I-44 are also likely during some portions of the bridge work.

The two existing cloverleaf ramps will be removed after the construction of the flyover ramps.

The cloverleaf ramps for westbound I-44 on-ramp to southbound I-235 and southbound I-235 off-ramp to eastbound I-44 will be widened and reconstructed.

Access to NW 63rd St from northbound US-77/Broadway Ext will be improved with two new off-ramps, one from mainline US-77/Broadway Ext and one from the eastbound I-44 flyover ramp to northbound US-77/Broadway Ext.

The northbound I-235/US-77/Broadway Ext on-ramp from N 50th St will be permanently closed to make room for the new northbound I-235 to westbound I-44 flyover ramp.

Options to avoid the I-235/I-44 work zone include I-35, SH-74/Lake Hefner Parkway and N Lincoln Blvd.

The final Off Broadway I-235 corridor widening is scheduled to take place in 2020 to reconstruct the westbound I-44 ramp to northbound US-77/Broadway Ext.

All work on the corridor widening is expected to be completed by 2022.
