Dutch paints and chemicals maker AkzoNobel has broken ground on a €50m ($55.3m) wood coatings facility expansion in High Point, North Carolina, US.

Covering 37 acres in High Point, the facility produces a range of products to serve the furniture, flooring and building products segments, as well as the company’s Chemcraft distributors.

The expansion is expected to include the installation of advanced production technology, as well as construction of a new raw materials warehouse, research lab and technical application centre.

AkzoNobel CEO Thierry Vanlancker said: “This is an historic moment which will help us reinforce our market leadership and further strengthen our commitment to our customers in North America.

“This investment clearly signals our intentions. We’re looking to accelerate our growth in the region and High Point has a vital role to play as we continue to build and expand market positions across our wood coatings portfolio.”

AkzoNobel said that modernising the facility will make production more flexible and efficient and will help the company serve its customers and partners in a better way.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said: “Global companies that do business in North Carolina time and again choose to expand their footprint here.

“High Point has long been a manufacturing hub and area workers are ready to ramp up production to support AkzoNobel’s reinvestment plan.”

Construction on the modernisation project is scheduled to be completed in 2021.

The company said that High Point, which is known as the ‘Home Furnishings Capital of the World’, has been home to its US wood coatings activities since 1955.

It also said that High Point has been involved in its long history of supplying the world’s leading manufacturers of furniture, flooring and building products.

In 2018, the company broke ground on a €90m ($99.5m) organic peroxide production facility in Tianjin, China.
