German battery-maker AKASOL has announced its plans to build a new battery production facility in metro Detroit area of Michigan, US.

AKASOL said that the opening of a dedicated business in North America is a response to the specific demand for its battery modules and can allow the company to pursue growth in the region.

The project is expected to generate considerable investment and create more than 200 jobs in the next five years.

The State of Michigan is said to have given its full backing for the company’s plans and has awarded a Michigan Business Development Program grant for the facility’s construction. The new facility is expected to begin production next year.

Michigan Economic Development Corporation CEO Jeff Mason said: “The decision by AKASOL to establish its first North American facility here underscores the strength of Michigan’s advanced manufacturing industry and robust supply chain.

“We welcome AKASOL’s commitment to Michigan and we look forward to working with the company for years to come as it continues to grow and create jobs here.”

AKASOL’s new production facility will have a same capacity to the company’s present series production site in Langen, Germany. Initial production, which will begin next year, will focus on 2nd generation AKASystem OEM PRC battery system, which is claimed to have high energy density.

By 2021, AKASOL expects to ramp up the production to 400MWh in a three-shift operation.

AKASOL CEO Sven Schulz said: “Not only will our new North American production facility enable us to meet the high demand we’re receiving from our global customers, particularly a well-known Swedish manufacturer of trucks and buses, but it is also a core part of our international growth plans.

“Our unrivalled battery expertise from module to system level, coupled with the fact we are already undertaking series production for market-leading companies, means that we are well on the way to becoming the European market leader in commercial vehicle battery systems.

“Our new Michigan site will accelerate our business development activities with both new and existing North American customers.”
