Italian football club AFC Fiorentina has unveiled plans for a new €420M stadium in Florence.
The new stadium will have a 40,000-seat capacity, and the closest fans will be only seven meters from the pitch.
The 48ha project, to be located in a northwest suburb of Florence, will feature a shopping centre, restaurants, a 200-bed hotel, a car park and new transport links.
Forentina owner, Andrea Della Valle, said: “The initial project started nine years ago. It’s a big step for the city of Florence and all of Italy, but it’ll need a bit of patience, maybe another four years or so. It was necessary to solve some small issues.
“I’d like to call this the Purple Renaissance. There’s still a long way to go, but we’ve set down the first brick. It’s further proof of how much the Della Valle family are attached to Florence.”
Arup designed the new stadium. “We have collaborated with Fiorentina for the last two years to define a detailed brief, specifically built on their desires and expectations. We have therefore designed a stadium that reflects the local history and landscape in a modern way and provides a great and comfortable new home for the team and its fans,” said Luca Buzzoni, Arup’s project leader.
The football club is looking for investors for the new stadium project, which is expected to be complete at the start of the 2021-22 season.
Construction work is set to begin in 2019.
