US-based infrastructure services firm AECOM, along with partner luis vidal + architects, has won a design contract from the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) for the modernisation of Boston Logan International Airport’s Terminal E.
AECOM is the prime consultant and architect/engineer and luis vidal + architects is the vision architect.
Under the terms of the contract, AECOM will provide full architectural and engineering design services to Massport for work on more than 400,000ft2 of terminal space.
Major work includes renovations to the existing terminal, enhanced ticketing and international arrivals, a new consolidated passenger security checkpoint, baggage systems, concession space, airline clubs, and a central, multi-storey hall.
The modernisation programme will include major renovations to the international arrivals and customs hall, utilising a combination of roof and window designs to maximise natural light and efficiency.
The roof will have two skylights facing north, in the form of eyelashes, protecting the interior from direct sun exposure.
On the south, the roof strokes down the façade to reveal a several openings that face downtown Boston, offering departing passengers a view of its radiant skyline.
The completed terminal will seek LEED Gold status from the US Green Building Council.
Recently, the infrastructure services firm has completed the A380 accommodation and overall terminal renovation project for Massport at Boston Logan and Terminal E.
AECOM principal architect and senior vice-president Terry Rookard said: “This project will elevate Massport’s reputation for providing a world-class passenger experience to its international passengers.
“As one of the busiest airports in the US, Boston Logan will be prepared to meet customer expectation and demand well into the future.”
Luis Vidal said: “Elegance and welcoming are the two words that come to my mind when I think of Boston.
“When designing Massport’s extension to Terminal E, we wanted these words to become part of its DNA.”
