US-based engineering firm Aecom has secured a design services contract from the Welsh government for a third bridge over the Menai Strait.
Under the contract, Aecom will select a preferred route and develop the initial designs for a bridge crossing that will connect Anglesey with mainland Wales.
Aecom will deliver a range of services, including bridge and highway engineering, transport planning, traffic modelling and environmental and ecology consultancy services.
Additionally, a review of the potential impact of the proposed scheme on the two historic bridges to develop a design that minimises impact on the environment and is sympathetic to the existing crossings will be carried out.
The new bridge is expected to help improve journey times, and ease congestion on the two existing bridges.
Work on the project will commence immediately and follows Aecom’s previous work to develop a strategic business case for the scheme.
Aecom will collaborate with its sub-consultants Knight Architects and Ruthin-based environmental consultancy Richards, Moorehead & Laing.
