US-based multinational computer software company Adobe has broken ground on new office tower in downtown San Jose, California.

The new 1.3 million ft² development, named Adobe North Tower, is the company's fourth tower at global headquarters in downtown San Jose.

Capable of accommodating 4,000 employees, the new office tower will be all-electric, helping the firm in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The building will be powered by clean, renewable energy and will be among the first of its kind in Silicon Valley, the firm said.

Adobe plans to use pedestrian bridge to connect the North Tower to existing campus by extending it over San Fernando Street.

The tech firm said in a statement: "This bridge will be the first of its kind in downtown San Jose and will play an integral part in keeping our employees connected as we grow. We’ll also be including retail space in the North Tower."

For the development, Adobe is working with over 260 local San Jose nonprofits, including Downtown Streets Team, City Year, Second Harvest Food Bank, Sacred Heart Community Service, The Family Giving Tree, among others.

The 18-storey tower is planned to be completed in 2020. Sares Regis Group has been selected by Adobe to serve as the development manager for the Adobe North Tower development.

Adobe, in a statement, noted: "The all-electric North Tower will help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and demonstrates our commitment to power our operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2035, which will reduce our environmental footprint.

"In addition to reducing energy consumption and investing in new technology that can help us achieve our goals, we are also advocating for policies to open up direct access to renewable energy in California and beyond, so that not just our business, but the community as a whole can benefit."
