EDF Energy Renewables has announced the start of construction work on a new offshore wind farm off the coast of Blyth in Northumberland, UK. The Blyth Offshore wind project will be wholly owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles and will be constructed by a UK joint venture between EDF Energies Nouvelles and EDF Energy. The project, with a maximum total generating capacity of about 100MW, will generate enough electricity to power 33,000 homes in the region. The power produced from the wind farm will be supplied to an electricity substation at Blyth, which will be constructed by Balfour Beatty, for transmission to the National Grid. Offshore work will start in 2017 with the installation of five 41.5MW turbines and will be completed in the same year. The project will create about 200 jobs during peak construction.The project will use the latest generation of offshore wind turbines, to be manufactured and installed by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, and will be the first project to use 66kV cable technology, which will be installed by VMBS — specialist in subsea power cable installation. The wind farm will use a new type of foundations developed by BAM for offshore wind turbines, representing the first time the technology will have been used.EDF Energy Renewables CEO Matthieu Hue said: “As a company, we already have a strong presence in the North East, in low carbon electricity generation and serving customers including our first offshore wind farm at Teesside so we’re pleased to be able to add another project to our portfolio in the region.“We are delighted that the gravity based foundations will be made in Newcastle. The Port of Blyth will be used for operations and maintenance and the blades for the turbines will be made on the Isle of Wight."
Swiber Holdings has won three new contracts for projects worth $215M in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.Swiber, an offshore construction services provider to the oil and gas industry, has been awarded an engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract by a major oil company in Europe to replace pipeline in Qatar.The Group has started on the engineering phase of the development, which is its first offshore construction project in the Middle East, and is set to be complete in the third quarter of 2017. Recently, Swiber has also secured new contracts for two projects in Myanmar and Vietnam.The company is participating in a consortium that will carry out EPCI of two wellhead platforms, associated pipelines and tie-ins for a project off the coast of Myanmar. The customer has options to award an additional two wellhead platforms. Work on the project has already started and is anticipated to be complete by the first quarter of 2018. The third contract involves the provision of transport and installation services for a full field development project in the waters of Vietnam. The company has just started work on the contract, which is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2016.Swiber’s deputy Group CEO Darren Yeo said: “Despite the ongoing oil market volatility and challenging conditions in the offshore oil and gas industry, Swiber continues to demonstrate our ability to successfully secure new projects. Swedish energy firm Vattenfall is set to commence construction on the €1bn offshore wind farm Horns Rev 3 off the west coast of Denmark.In February 2015, Vattenfall won the bid to build the wind farm, which will generate enough electricity to power 400,000 Danish homes. Vattenfall’s president and CEO Magnus Hall said: "Horns Rev 3 is an important part of Vattenfall’s ambitions in the field of wind and particularly on our focus on offshore wind farms."Horns Rev 3 also gives a clear signal to the world around us that Vattenfall’s strategy is to make new investments in renewable electricity generation and to grow in wind. "Vattenfall supports the transition to a totally renewable energy system and takes up the challenge, in spite of current low electricity prices and excess capacity."The wind farm will be commissioned in 2018.
Sener and Acciona have begun the turnkey construction of the €500M Kathu Solar Park Complex in South Africa.Located in the town of Kathu, in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, the 100MW plant will be able to generate enough electricity to supply 80,000 homes.Both firms will carry out the engineering, construction management and commissioning of the plant until its turnkey delivery. The project, part of the 2010 Integrated Resource Program (IRP) National Electricity Plan, will provide an increase in the country's generation capacity until it reaches 86.8GW in 2030.The project, which uses Sener’s ‘SENERtrough’ technology and a molten salt storage system, is scheduled to commence operations in 2018. It represents the second solar thermal project in South Africa on which both companies are working together, the first being the recently-opened 50MW Bokpoort plant.
The Government of Egypt and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development have signed a loan agreement of $98.6M for the construction of five desalination plants in Southern Sinai, Egypt.The project will aim to meet the demand for potable water in some towns in the South of Sinai, as well as in existing residential settlements, and other settlements due to be established, in the Sinai Peninsula.The five plants will process water from the Red Sea and other related works.One of the plants, to be located in the town of El Tor, will have a daily capacity of 20,000cb m, while the other four plants, to be located in Ras Sidr, Abu Zenima, Dahab and Nuwaiba, will each have a capacity of 10,000cb m per day.The development includes the supply of electricity to the plants and the installation of pipelines with a total length of about 42km and diameters ranging between 500–800mm for transmission of the desalinated water to storage tanks, and pipelines with a total length of about 183km and diameters ranging between 200–500mm for transmission of water from the tanks to the nearby settlements.Additionally, it will also involve the construction of eight pumping stations and the necessary networks for distribution of water inside the settlements. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
Three companies have started construction on the 224.25MW Nicolas-Riou wind project in Canada.EDF EN Canada, Énergie Éolienne Bas-St-Laurent (EEBSL), and Régie intermunicipale de l'énergie Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine (RIEGÎM) are working on the CAD500M ($381.4M) project, which is located in the RCM of Les Basques and Rimouski-Neigette.The project is anticipated to be operational at the end of 2017. The ATAL-Degremont-China Harbour joint venture has secured a HKD$3.14bn ($404M) contract from Hong Kong’s Drainage Services Department for the first phase of the San Wai Sewage Treatment Works (STW) upgrade.The project will use the latest sedimentation technology, which is more efficient than conventional clarifiers and requires less space, saving almost 40% of the land. It will also deploy the BIM technology to visualise the plant’s design with 3D images.Drainage Services Department director Edwin Tong said: “The project comprises the design and construction of sewage treatment facilities with a daily treatment capacity of 200,000cb m to cater for the projected additional sewage flow due to development needs in the Northwest New Territories after 2020.“The works will also upgrade the treatment level of the STW to the chemically enhanced primary treatment level with ultraviolet disinfection facilities for reducing pollution loads to the northwestern waters.”Upon completion of construction works in 2020, the joint venture will undertake the operation, repair and maintenance of the STW for a contractual operation period of 15 years.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a €294M loan to enhance natural gas storage and distribution in Kazakhstan.EBRD will provide €242M to Intergas Central Asia to enhance the gas storage to its full capacity of four billion cubic metres (bcm) from the current limit of 2.6bcm, and €52M to KazTransGas-Aimak for the expansion and modernisation of the natural gas distribution network in several regions of Kazakhstan. The improvement will allow the utility to connect new households and industrial customers to gas supplies, while reducing the current dependency on coal-generated electricity.EBRD’s president Sir Suma Chakrabarti said: “We have worked consistently with Kazakhstan on projects which develop the green economy. “Few approaches create such immediate progress as a switch to cleaner sources of energy. Gas is much cleaner than coal and helps to complement renewable energy.“We are very pleased to start our cooperation with KazTransGas and to continue our enhanced partnership with Kazakhstan with these two major steps towards a sustainable future.”
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded an AED703M ($191.3M) contract for phases 4 and 5 of the Dubai Water Canal Project.Phase 4, which will cost about AED307M ($83.5M), is part of infrastructural works for property development on both sides of the canal, including roads and utility lines.Estimated to cost AED396M ($107.8M), phase 5 will link the Business Bay Canal with the Dubai Water Canal and terminate at the Arabian Gulf.The canal stretches 3.2km from the Business Bay Canal up to the Arabian Gulf via the Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Road.The scope of the work will include the construction of quay walls using precast concrete slabs along the stretch of the canal, the completing and diverting of utility lines and key services, and the removal of impacted services.It will also include the treatment of hyper-saline water from the Business Bay Lakes, the removal of sand barriers in the course of the canal, and the construction of three marine transport stations.RTA’s director-general and chairman Mattar Al Tayer said: “Projects to be constructed on the waterfront will be served by modern water transport means, and result in improved quality of water in the Dubai Creek.”Both phases of the project are expected to be complete by the end of September.
Italian construction firm Salini Impregilo has secured a contract worth €2.5bn for the Koyash Dam hydropower project in Ethiopia.The contract, awarded by the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), will include the construction of a 170m-high rolled compacted dam creating a reservoir volume of 6,000M cubic metres.With an installed capacity of 2,200MW, the facility will generate 6,460GWh of power annually.Salini Impregilo said the new project along with GIBE III, which went into operation recently, and GERD, the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile will enable Ethiopia to become Africa’s leader in terms of energy production.
US-based services firm CH2M has secured design-build contracts for two infrastructure projects in Texas and California.They include the $1.2bn Northeast Water Purification Plant Expansion (NEWPP) project in Houston and the $85M Cogeneration Facility project in San Jose, California.The NEWPP project will be delivered by the Houston Waterworks Team, a joint venture between CH2M and CDM Smith, over the next nine years.Under the contract, the team will be responsible for designing and constructing a new water facility, start-up, commissioning and operating activities. The project also includes the expansion of the city of Houston's existing NEWPP from 80mgd to 320mgd through two construction phases.CH2M has also been tasked to design and construct the new cogeneration plant at the San José Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility.The scope of the project involves a new digester gas treatment system, a control system and monitoring system with connectivity to the Wastewater Facility's Distributed Control System, electrical switchgear, a new digester gas pipeline and natural gas pipeline, new heat recovery systems, and civil work including parking areas and utilities.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has offered a £525M loan for the construction of the £2.7bn Beatrice wind farm off the coast of Scotland, UK.The EIB loan, partly guaranteed by the European Fund for Strategic Investments, will have tenure of 19 years.To be constructed 14km off the Caithness coast, the 86-turbine wind farm will produce up to 588MW of electricity, enough to meet the energy needs of over 475,000 homes.The wind farm will use Siemens 7MW wind turbines with 154m diameter rotor blades. EIB’s vice president Jonathan Taylor said: “We are pleased to provide £525M to support construction of the Beatrice wind farm that will strengthen renewable energy generation in Scotland. This also represents the first Scottish scheme to be backed by the new European Fund for Strategic Investments.“EIB backing for energy investment across the UK demonstrates our firm commitment to supporting ambitious energy projects that create jobs and benefit local companies.”
Skanska, in joint venture with Porr and A.Hak, has secured a contract from the National Grid for the Humber Tunnel project in Northern England, UK.Under the £150M contract, the joint venture will design and construct a 5km tunnel below the river Humber, inserting a single string of 42” steel pipe and connecting it to the above ground installations (AGIs) at Paull and Goxhill. The pipeline will connect to the existing National Grid AGI sites at Paull and Goxhill and will be able to transport natural gas at a pressure of 70barg.National Grid’s senior project manager Phil Croft said: “This pipeline will be the longest gas pipeline in a tunnel, inserted in a single string in the world. To do this we need partners with experience and a proven track record.“Skanska, PORR and A.Hak were able to demonstrate their expertise and knowledge throughout the tender process, giving us the confidence that this was the right company to build this tunnel and pipeline in such an environmentally sensitive and commercially busy river.”The planning approval from the Planning Inspectorate for the three-year project is due in September 2016.
Subsea 7 and Seaway Heavy Lifting have secured an engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract for the Beatrice wind farm turbine foundations and array cables in Scotland.The scope of the $1.3bn contract,awarded by Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited, will also involve the transport and installation of transmission modules for the offshore wind farm.The project’s management and engineering has already commenced at Subsea 7’s office in Aberdeen, Scotland and at Seaway Heavy Lifting’s offices in Glasgow, Scotland, and Zoetermeer, the Netherlands.Offshore installation activities will take place in 2017 and 2018 using seaway Heavy Lifting’s heavy-lift vessels, Stanislav Yudin and Oleg Strashnov.Subsea 7 CEO Jean Cahuzac said: “This offshore wind farm project is our largest North Sea award to date. Subsea 7 and Seaway Heavy Lifting have a strong reputation in their respective areas of expertise.“This contract recognises both companies’ capability to execute contracts safely, on time and within cost targets and is another major step forward in establishing Seaway Heavy Lifting as a leading EPCI contractor in the offshore renewables market.”When fully operational in 2019, the wind farm will produce 588MW of power.
Southern Company subsidiary Mississippi Power and Origis Energy have started construction on the $100M solar power plant in Lamar County, Mississippi.Located on a 590-acre site, the facility will feature more than 215,000 polycrystalline solar panels and will produce 52MW of energy, enough to supply about 8,000 homes. Mississippi Power will secure all energy and related renewable energy credits generated by the plant that is set to become the largest solar facility in Mississippi when completed.Mississippi Power president and CEO Anthony Wilson said: "By working with Origis Energy and the Area Development Partnership, we will have nearly doubled the amount of electricity generated by renewable energy going to the Mississippi Power grid."The project will create nearly 100 construction jobs and is scheduled to be complete in the first quarter of 2017.
NCC and Kungälv Municipality have entered into a partnership for the construction of a $36bn waterworks in Kungälv, Sweden.The project is set to provide drinking water to the municipalities of Kungälv, Tjörn, Ale and Stenungssund.The waterworks will have as its water source the Göta älv river and will be able to supply 1,080cb m of water per hour when completed.Maria Sondell, project manager at Kungälv Municipality, said: “Kungälv and the surrounding municipalities need to secure their supply of drinking water and we will build, together with NCC, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with the latest water purification technology.”NCC Infrastructure business area manager, Svante Hagman said: “Working on this type of sustainable community solution is incredibly motivating. “We have been working with Kungälv Municipality on project engineering and dimensioning of the new waterworks since the autumn. “We are moving into the next phase of the partnering arrangement that involves detail engineering so that we can start construction soon. This is scheduled to begin no later than May.”
Menter Newydd has been selected by Horizon Nuclear Power to build the £14bn Wylfa Newydd nuclear power project in Anglesey, UK.Menter Newydd, a specially created joint venture, includes Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe, Ltd., Bechtel Management Company, Ltd. and JGC Corporation (UK) Ltd. Hyflux and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) consortium’s project company TuasOne Pte Ltd has secured project financing for TuasOne waste-to-energy plant in Singapore.The project company has secured a SGD653M ($472.7M) 27-year loan facility, which will be utilized to fund the development, its construction and start-up costs.The project financing is provided by DBS Bank, Malayan Banking Berhad Singapore Branch, Mizuho Bank Ltd and The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd, which are the underwriters and book-runners for the facility.DBS Bank Ltd, Maybank Kim Eng Securities Pte Ltd, Mizuho Bank Ltd and The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd were the lead arrangers in the project financing.
Germany-based KfW IPEX-Bank is providing a loan worth €104M to the French energy provider Neoen to support the construction of energy projects in France.The projects include a 30MWp photovoltaic (PV) facility and two wind farms with a total capacity of 46MWp.German manufacturer SolarWorld is providing the modules for the PV plant, which is being built in the Tarn department in southwestern France, while German wind farm manufacturer Enercon and the Danish company Vestas are supplying the equipment to the Bussy Lettrée and Raucourt II wind projects in northeastern France. Neoen corporate finance director Charlie Canevet said: “We are happy to be working with KfW IPEX-Bank again on our new projects in France. For our global activities in the field of renewable energies, we partner with dependable banks with proven structuring expertise.”The plant will be completed soon and the two wind farms are expected to be operational by the end of 2016.
Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) has inked an agreement with Indonesia-based PT Perusahaan Daerah Pertambangan dan Energi South Sumatra to build a 363km gas pipeline.Under the $600M contract, KOGAS will construct a 245km gas pipeline in South Sumatra, Indonesia and another gas pipeline, measuring 118km, in Bali. It will also operate and provide the project’s maintenance services over a 30-year period.KOGAS aims to conduct a feasibility study and assess the results before making a decision whether to proceed with the project.Established in 1983 by the Korean government, KOGAS operates four LNG regasification terminals and 4,440km of natural gas pipelines in South Korea.
