A joint venture between KBR, SMEC Australia and US-based Jacobs Engineering has been appointed to oversee design at the Darlington Upgrade project in Adelaide, Australia.The design JV was subcontracted by the Gateway South Consortium — comprising Fulton Hogan and Laing O’Rourke — which was recently selected to design and build the AUD620M ($440M) road project.The Jacobs, KBR and SMEC Australia JV will be responsible for the reconfiguration of the existing 3.3km-long road from the Southern Expressway to north of Tonsley Boulevard, and the design of a lowered, non-stop motorway.Jacobs’ senior vice president of buildings and infrastructure Patrick Hill said: “We are proud to be involved in this landmark transport project for South Australia and look forward to working closely with the other members of the Gateway South team.“This project represents an excellent opportunity to leverage our proven experience and expertise on major transport infrastructure projects.”The majority of the detailed design and approvals work is set to commence in 2016, with all ground works anticipated to be finished by 2018.
Australian construction firm Watpac has been selected as the preferred builder by the Australian Unity to deliver the $1.1bn Herston Quarter project in Brisbane, Australia.This selection follows the recent announcement of Australian Unity — a healthcare, financial services, and independent and assisted living organisation — as the preferred tenderer for the project by the Queensland government. The development — located next to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital — will include the construction of a public rehabilitation hospital, a private hospital, residential aged care, retirement living and student accommodation.It will also feature health research, childcare, a co-working hub, and education and training facilities.The first stage of works is expected to begin in 2017.

Australian construction firm Brookfield Multiplex has completed construction work on a residential building in Southbank, Melbourne.The $124M project, named Platinum Tower, includes 438 apartments available in one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom options.The development, designed by Squillace, features a swimming pool, a sauna, a spa, a gym, private dining, winter gardens and a sky lounge with views of Melbourne CBD, Albert Park and Port Phillip Bay.The tower’s podium includes retail space, a ground level restaurant and café and concierge facilities for residents. It also provides nine levels of car parking.Brookfield Multiplex Victoria regional managing director Graham Cottam said: “We are delighted to deliver another premium residential tower to Melbourne’s skyline. We have drawn on our specialist expertise to meet construction challenges associated with delivering high-rise towers in the busy CBD environment.”The project created 1,900 jobs during construction and was completed in just under two years.
Three consortia have been selected for the construction of a new metro tunnel and five new underground stations in Australia.The shortlisted bidders for the AU$6bn (£3.5bn) public-private partnership (PPP) include Continuum Victoria, Cross Yarra Partnership and Moving Melbourne Together.The PPP will be responsible for the construction and fit-out of the 9km metro tunnel and five new underground stations — to be located at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.Daniel Andrews, premier of Victoria, said: “The best construction companies in the world are lining up to build the biggest public transport project in Australia — the Metro Tunnel.“Melbourne needs the Metro Tunnel and we’re not wasting a moment — major work starts next year. The Metro Tunnel will let us run trains so often that you don’t need a timetable — you just turn up and go.”At least six tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be used during construction, with three giant shafts — up to 11 storeys deep — to be excavated at Franklin Street and A’Beckett Street near Melbourne Central station, and at City Square near Flinders Street Station.The consortia now have to submit a formal proposal by early next year. A contract is expected to be awarded by the end of 2017. Finbar Group is set to develop three residential towers in Western Australia’s Applecross suburb.The $350M three-stage project will be built on an 8,072sq m site and will feature 440 apartments with independent resort-style amenities. The ground floor will house commercial property.Finbar’s managing director Darren Pateman said: “This development will provide different living options to suit a range of buyers with needs that reflect their individual situations including downsizers who want to remain in their existing area, families, couples and younger buyers wanting to get a foothold into the new apartment market in a postcode that would otherwise be unobtainable for them.”Finbar has already started detailed design work on the project and hopes to submit the three stages for consideration and approval within the next two months. The company intends to begin the first stage of marketing early next year.
