Plastics, chemical and refining company LyondellBasell has announced plans to build a new $700M high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at its manufacturing complex in La Porte, Texas.The new plant will have an annual capacity of 500,000t.LyondellBasell CEO and chairman of the management board Bob Patel said: "This project represents the next generation of technology."This location is ideal for this facility because of the feedstock advantage we enjoy, the ability to ship product around the world and, most importantly, the outstanding workforce that the Gulf Coast has to offer."The project is anticipated to create up to 1,000 jobs during the construction peak and 75 full time positions.Construction on the project is expected to commence in early 2017 and will be complete by 2019.
Skanska has been awarded a $200M contract by Inspira Health Network to construct a new hospital building in New Jersey, US.The scope of the contract includes the construction of a five-storey hospital with 204 beds.The main tower of the development will feature operating rooms, an emergency department, imaging suites, as well as administrative, dining and support services.The 41,000sq m scheme also involves the construction of a new central utility plant, which will supply electrical power, heating, hot water and chilled water.Construction on the project will commence in the first quarter of 2017 and is expected to be complete by December 2019.
US-based company Cologix has announced a $130M project to expand its data centre and interconnection footprint in Columbus, Ohio.The 15,000sq m, 18+MW data centre will be located on its current eight-acre campus in Columbus. It will be directly connected to the company’s existing data centres in Ohio.Cologix CEO Grant van Rooyen said: "Large enterprises are increasingly interested in outsourcing internal data centres with an eye toward leveraging cloud services for some aspects of their IT systems."Until now, there has not been a neutral facility in Columbus that can combine connectivity with the scale that can support large cloud and enterprise deployments, and we are excited to address that need with our new data centre."The company has secured all required permissions and expects to break ground immediately with its construction partners Parallel Technologies and Kraus Anderson. The project is anticipated to create 128 full time jobs in the region and the first phase of the project is expected to be operational in mid-2017.
US-based pizza chain Little Caesars and Olympia Development of Michigan have broken ground on the retailer’s new $150M global headquarters expansion project in Detroit, Michigan.The nine-storey, 22,000sq m development represents Caesars’ first headquarters building constructed in Detroit in more than 10 years.The headquarters campus features a two-storey lobby connected to a new welcome centre, a screening room, a 425-seat training room, a fitness centre, retail and dining spaces, training facilities, and innovation kitchens.Little Caesars’ president and CEO David Scrivano said: "Today, as we break ground on an exciting new development that will anchor the Columbia Street neighbourhood of the District Detroit, we're excited to continue our longstanding commitment to the people that have helped make a single Little Caesars pizza shop into one of the world's largest pizza chains."The expansion project — led by Detroit construction manager Brinker-Christman and architect SmithGroupJJR — is expected to be complete in 2018.
PCL Construction Management has reached substantial completion on the new $278M football stadium project in Regina, Canada.Called the Mosaic Stadium, it marks the first landmark project of the $1bn Regina Revitalization Initiative being undertaken by the city in three phases.The facility will serve as the new home of football team Saskatchewan Roughriders and will have the built-in flexibility to host different sports and entertainment events.It will feature a translucent spectator roof and a general admission lounge on its west side. 68% of the stadium’s seats will be located in the sunken lower bowl, offering unobstructed views of the field.PCL Regina district manager Sean Hamelin said: “The talented and dedicated individuals who worked on site and in support of this project should be extremely proud of what they accomplished. “They worked collaboratively, sharing in the success and setbacks, with a common goal of creating something they can be proud of. They have achieved that goal and created a facility the City and Province can be proud of.”
Environmental remediation work has started on a new $340M mixed-use redevelopment project in midtown St. Louis, Missouri.The City Foundry Saint Louis at Cortex, the new name of the former Federal Mogul Foundry property, is being designed and developed by Lawrence Group.Phase one of the project will involve the creation of 4,500sq m of restaurant and food hall space, 11,500sq m of office space in the City Foundry building complex, 12,000sq m of retail space that will be home to up to 45 retailers, and a 511-car parking garage.The first phase, expected to open in 2018, will also include the creation of amenities such as public plaza spaces, bike share, electric recharge stations and dedicated ride sharing drop-off.Later phases of the project will include the construction of a 279-unit residential tower, 25,000sq m of office, as well as 1,500sq m of retail space.The project will involve significant reuse of the historic structures, and will be funded by Eagle Bank.According to Lawrence Group, Bull Moose Industries has become a major investment partner in the redevelopment.Bull Moose’s CEO Michael Blatz said: “This new investment by Lord Paul represents our continued confidence in St. Louis as well as our belief in the exciting vision laid out by Steve Smith for the City Foundry development.”
PCL Construction has started construction on General Electric’s (GE) multi-modal “Brilliant Factory” in Welland, Canada.The plant — the first of its kind in Canada — will initially produce GE Power’s reciprocating gas engines, components for compression, mechanical drive and power generation, and components for GE transportation diesel engines.GE Canada president and CEO Elyse Allan said: “Export Development Canada’s (EDC) commitment to building global business activities and the outstanding support offered by the Ontario government, Niagara Region, and City strongly influenced our decision to build the factory in Welland. “I look forward to continuing our outstanding collaboration to create jobs and economic growth.”The plant is anticipated to create 220 jobs with operations commencing in early 2018. The first phase of the project is expected to cost $165M. According to GE, the multi-modal design enables future production expansion for its other businesses including power, oil & gas, and transportation.
US-based logistics and shipping company UPS has announced a $310M project to expand its Centennial Ground hub in Louisville, Kentucky.The expansion will almost triple the size of the company’s facility to 78,000sq m. The move comes in response to increased e-commerce and traditional retail package volume.According to UPS, the project will nearly double its current sorting capacity to 85,000 packages per hour and add additional sorting automation equipment. Lou Rivieccio, president of UPS Ohio Valley District, said: “We are excited to have construction underway. This project is a win for everyone involved. It will benefit our customers, generate jobs, and enhance economic development in Louisville and the surrounding region.“Centennial offers UPS customers the advantage of being at the centre of the world’s largest package delivery company. It is one of UPS’ most important facilities.”The project will be delivered in three phases and is expected to continue through 2020. It will create 300 full and part-time jobs in the region.
Balfour Beatty has won a $196M contract from Property Group Partners to build the North Block phase of its Capitol Crossing development in Washington, D.C.The North Block phase will involve the construction of two 12-storey, mixed-use office buildings to be connected by a glass bridge.It will include 6,500sq m of retail space in addition to 1,100 parking spaces and 440 bicycle spaces.Leon Blondin, president of Balfour Beatty’s Mid-Atlantic division, said: “We’re honored to be their construction partner in building this truly historic development in the downtown core that will reconnect long-divided Capitol Hill to the East End. “Having already managed the preconstruction, utility relocation and platform construction phases, it’s very gratifying to continue our work to take this project vertical and deliver its first two mixed-use buildings.” Work will first commence on the building located at 200 Massachusetts Avenue, followed by the second building at 250 Massachusetts Avenue. The project will create 350 construction jobs.The 204,000sq m Capitol Crossing development, expected to become the first Eco-District in the city, will comprise 5 mixed-use buildings sprawling over a seven-acre site.
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) has broken ground on its new stadium in Los Angeles.The new facility, to be located on the Los Angeles Sports Arena former site, will be known as Banc of California Stadium, following a naming-rights deal with the bank.The 22,000-seat stadium — designed by architectural firm Gensler — will be a soccer-specific venue, but will also host community and cultural events. LAFC’s lead managing owner Larry Berg said: “After years of planning and hard work we are set to make history here in the heart of the city. Banc of California Stadium will allow for greater sports viewing and live entertainment experiences to take place in Los Angeles than ever before.”Expected to be complete in 2018, the stadium is projected to bring over $350M in private investment to South Los Angeles.Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti said: “Los Angeles is the sports and entertainment capital of the world, and today we open a new chapter in our rich history with the world’s most popular game. “The construction of this new stadium in Exposition Park will create thousands of good-paying jobs — and when their new home is built, our team will bring soccer fans from everywhere into the heart of our city.”
French tyre manufacturer Michelin Group has started construction on its new €450M plant in central Mexico.The 142,000sq m plant — which represents the group's 69th worldwide and 21st in North America — will be located across 98ha in the Parque Industrial León-Bajio. The plant will have the capacity to produce 4-5M tyres annually. Michelin Group CEO Jean-Dominique Senard said: "Michelin's customers for passenger-vehicle tires are demanding more and more of our innovative, high-tech tyres to meet the performance requirements of the growing market in North America."This plant will improve our capacity to meet those demands, as a key element of Michelin's 'Service to the Customer' initiative in North America and worldwide."Construction work on the facility is anticipated to commence immediately, with completion currently scheduled for late 2018. The project is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs in the region.
A joint venture of Skanska and Closner Construction has secured a $206M contract from Duke LifePoint Healthcare to manage the construction of its new replacement hospital for the existing UP Health System-Marquette (pictured) in Michigan.The new 50,000sq m facility, designed by Gresham Smith & Partners, includes 243 beds, 14,000sq m of space for diagnostic and therapeutic services and 17,000sq m of patient care services.The project will include 1,400sq m of administrative support services, 4,000sq m of operational support services, a new central power plant, and mechanical, electrical and telecommunications areas.Additionally, it will feature a 9,000sq m adjoining medical office building, and a 16,000sq m parking lot. Construction work started in May 2016 and is scheduled for completion in October 2018.

Medical University of South Carolina has broken ground on the $385M Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion in South Carolina.The 10-storey project will include paediatric procedural-surgical capacities, including rooms for bronchoscopy, endoscopy, surgery and interventional radiology.The development will include a dedicated floor for the care of children with cancer and a comprehensive paediatric heart centre.It will also feature two obstetrical operating rooms, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with 82 private rooms, and an advanced fetal care centre.Medical University of South Carolina’s president David Cole said: “We awarded degrees to more students than ever before, and are on pace to bring in more than $250M in sponsored research funding.”The development is scheduled to open in 2019.
Extell Development Company has partnered with SMI USA to develop a $3bn residential and commercial project in midtown Manhattan.The 1,550ft-high Central Park Tower — to be located at 225 West 57th Street — is expected to be the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere when completed.The project was designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture — which designed the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai — and is set to house fashion retailer Nordstrom’s first New York store.Gary Barnett, founder and CEO of Extell Development Company, said: “This strategic alliance with SMI brings together two international industry leaders with a track record of creating iconic global skyscrapers. SMI has developed the tallest building in Shanghai and we look forward to our partnership as we jointly develop the tallest building in New York City.“We believe the superb location, views, design and quality of Central Park Tower will make it the most important residential building ever to be built in New York City and expect it to be a great success for Extell and SMI.”The project is scheduled for completion in 2019.
