US-based home improvement retailer Lowe's Companies has unveiled plans to develop a new $100M direct fulfilment centre in Robertson County, Tennessee.The 102,000sq m centre will ship parcels directly to Lowe’s customers and stores nationwide.Lowe’s chief supply chain officer Brent Kirby said: “We’re continually working to make doing business with Lowe’s easier for customers.“Investing to build a new fulfilment centre — the first of its kind for Lowe’s — allows us to offer customers more products online, consolidate multiple parcel shipments and ship purchases directly to customers faster and more efficiently.“The Nashville area was chosen due to its existing large shipping hubs, access to interstate roadways and well-skilled workforce.”Scheduled to be operational by the third quarter of 2018, the facility will initially employ about 400 people, reaching 600 by 2022.
Hillwood Communities has started construction on its new $500M master-planned community in Celina, Texas.The development — located on a 400-acre site at the northeast corner of FM 1461 and Coit Road — will include 1,250 single-family homes featuring resort-style amenities, and a linear park with an amenity centre, including a resort style pool, pavilion and outdoor kitchen.It will also feature 63 acres of green space with multiple community parks and several miles of trails.Hillwood Communities’ senior vice president Elaine Ford said: “Celina is a booming city in North Dallas, and we are excited to partner with them and local vendors to bring jobs and businesses along with more residents here.“The groundbreaking of Lilyana is an exciting step for us, and we look forward to beginning the development of a first class community for potential residents.”The first phase of the development will be completed in early 2017.
Mercedes-Benz Vans has started construction of a new $500M plant in North Charleston, South Carolina.The new plant is an expansion of the existing 409,000sq ft van assembly site, which will cover around an additional 112,000sq m along with a 260,000sq m marshalling yard for finished vehicles.Mercedes-Benz Vans’ head of operations Frank Klein said: "Our new Sprinter plant is a big leap into the future of production at Mercedes-Benz Vans. "We are combining all of our global expertise and experience in this plant. In doing so, we make it one of the most advanced facilities in North America. The plant will meet the highest standards in quality, based on our globally standardized production system — from the first vehicle that rolls off the assembly line."The facility is scheduled to commence production before the end of the decade and create 1,300 jobs in the region.
American football team Minnesota Vikings has selected the development team for its new Eagan practice facility and headquarters in Minnesota, US.The team includes Crawford Architects, which will provide design services, and Kraus-Anderson Construction Company, which will act as the construction manager of the project.The new team headquarters will feature outdoor and indoor practice fields, a 6,000-seat stadium, team meeting rooms and auditorium, a broadcast studio and media centre, and administrative offices for staff.The facility represents the first phase in an overall 200-acre planned development, which is expected to include offices, retail, residential and hospitality units and a conference centre.Vikings’ executive vice president and CFO Steve Poppen said: “We are thrilled to once again engage in a large project with a Minnesota-based construction company such as Kraus-Anderson, as they have a tremendous body of work and strong reputation within the community.“Both Crawford Architects and Kraus-Anderson have long-standing relationships with the Vikings and together give us complete confidence in designing and building this project on time for a March 2018 opening.”The project is scheduled to break ground in early August 2016. Construction work on the first phase is expected to be completed in about 20 months.
Tata Steel Minerals Canada (TSMC) has secured CAD175M ($133M) in financing from the government of Quebec, Canada to support the implementation of a direct shipping iron ore project (DSO project) in Schefferville.The financial contribution includes equity stake of CAD125M ($94.7M) through the Capital Mining Hydrocarbons Fund and a loan of $50M ($37.8M) from Investissement Québec, acting as an agent of the government.Quebec’s deputy premier Lise Thériault said: "The support for this important project confirms our commitment to stimulate the growth of the Quebec mining industry, particularly in the Northern parts of Quebec, and encourage the responsible exploitation of our resources."In addition, this project will have significant benefits for our economy, creating up to 550 quality jobs in Quebec."TSMC has invested more than CAD1bn ($758M) in the project.
A $1.2bn mixed-use project proposal, including a 480ft tall SkySpire observation tower, has been selected by San Diego Port Authority Commission for downtown San Diego Waterfront.The project, proposed by ThrillCorp and designed by AVRP/Skyport Studios, will be part of the transformation of 70 acres of prime downtown San Diego waterfront.The SkySpire will feature gondolas that spiral around the tower as they transport guests to a top level interactive observation experience — to be designed in partnership with the Smithsonian Media.In addition, the redevelopment proposal includes an aquarium, Bayfront beaches, hotels, marinas, retail outlets, dining establishments and other entertainment.ThrillCorp’s CEO David Gust said: "We have a great set of patented products, a terrific team and a solid business plan. Selection of our team and our product in San Diego adds tremendous value potential to the company."It places our observation product in an absolute trophy location. We are on a mission to create the most unique entertainment experiences in the world and this another step along that path."The final review of the proposal is expected to be complete by October, after which the development process will begin immediately.
CSX is set to build a new $160M intermodal terminal in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.The terminal, known as Carolina Connector, will transfer containerised cargo between trains and trucks and will initially process more than 260,000 containers annually,North Carolina’s governor Pat McCrory said: “This historic project is part of our 25-year vision for transportation because it facilitates efficient and cost-effective movement of goods, which is critical for job creation and economic growth.“The Carolina Connector will be a game-changer for our state’s economy, supporting North Carolina’s agriculture, ports and position as the Southeast’s No. 1 state for manufacturing jobs.”During construction, the project is expected to create 300 short-term jobs in engineering, technical services and construction. The terminal is expected to open in 2020 and create 1,500 jobs throughout North Carolina as a result of its operations.
German science and technology company Merck Group has unveiled plans to construct a new $115M campus in Burlington, Massachusetts.The 26,000sq m facility will feature a customer collaboration laboratory and training centre, as well as office space. It will serve as a major hub for the company’s North American life science business.The firm’s 850 full-time Billerica-based life science employees will be relocated to the new campus, once completed.Merck Life Science executive board member and CEO Udit Batra said: “This new and more expansive Merck campus gives us a unique, multi-use life science hub in the United States — one that provides our employees and customers with a sustainable and collaborative working environment.“We have a long history in Massachusetts, and as a global leader in life science, we are committed to strengthening our presence in one of the most important science and technology hubs in the world.”The building is aiming to achieve LEED certification and will be complete in the second half of 2017.
Beck Construction is set to build a new $100M manufacturing, research and development facility for cosmetics company Mary Kay in Lewisville, Texas.The 44,000sq m facility — to be located on a 26.2-acre plot at the northeast corner of Denton Tap Road and Vista Ridge Mall Drive — will support Mary Kay’s future needs in producing high-quality skin care and colour cosmetics.Jacobs Engineering will provide the building design services for the project. Mary Kay’s chief supply chain officer Thomas Cho said: “This state-of-the-art facility is being specifically designed and built to meet not only today’s, but tomorrow’s, challenges to ensure the future of Mary Kay in an ever-growing and changing global marketplace.“We are very excited about our innovative vision for Mary Kay’s new US-based global manufacturing and research and development facility.”Construction work is set to begin in September 2016 with projected completion due for the first quarter of 2018.
US-based hotel development and management firm North Point Hospitality has started construction on a new $137M Marriott hotel in the USA.The company introduced the project by unveiling an original 300-pound model of the hotel, made with 63,636 Lego bricks. The development will include a 209-room AC Hotel, a 136-room Residence Inn and a 125-room SpringHill Suites.According to North Point Hospitality, guests of the three hotels will have access to all amenities within the tri-branded property, which will only have one main entrance. North Point Hospitality’s president and CEO S Jay Patel said: “This is an historic day for Nashville and the Marriott brand. We are excited to partner with Marriott to bring this tri-branded design to ‘booming’ Nashville.“Having successfully developed a dual-branded hotel in the past, the tri-branded concept was a natural progression.”The development is anticipated to open in mid-2018.
Turner Construction and Aecom have been selected by Hollywood Park Land Company to manage the construction of a new stadium for the Los Angeles Rams football team.The new 70,000-seat stadium is the centrepiece of a 298-acre mixed-use development being constructed in Inglewood, California.The stadium will include 275 luxury suites, over 16,000 premium seats, and about 279,000sq m of usable space. In addition to its seating capacity, the venue will also offer standing room for 27,000 spectators.Turner/AECOM joint venture principal-in-charge Robert Aylesworth said: "Construction of the new stadium is expected to provide more than 3,500 on-site construction jobs in Inglewood and, in total, more than 10,000 jobs through completion."We are bringing together a team of outstanding, highly creative people from Southern California, across the United States and around the world to build this once-in-a-lifetime project."The Turner/AECOM team joins three other firms already involved in the project: Project Development, which is providing project management services; HKS Architects of Dallas, which designed the new stadium; and Wilson Meany of San Francisco, which is providing entitlement and infrastructure management services.
Magellan Midstream Partners has unveiled plans to build a new $335M high-capacity marine terminal along the Houston Ship Channel in Pasadena, Texas.The new terminal will be constructed on a recently-acquired 200-acre site and will be able to handle refined petroleum products, including various grades of gasoline and diesel fuel, and renewable fuels. The project’s initial plans include the construction of about 1M barrels of refined products and ethanol storage supported by a long-term customer commitment. It will also involve the construction of a new marine dock capable of handling Panamax-sized ships or barges with up to a 40ft draft.Furthermore, a 36-inch diameter pipeline will be constructed between the partnership's existing Galena Park, Texas terminal and the new terminal. The existing 18-inch Texas City—Pasadena pipeline will be also connected to the new facility.Magellan Midstream Partners’ CEO Michael Mears said: "Demand for refined products export capabilities from the Gulf Coast continues to grow, and Magellan is well-positioned to take advantage of these opportunities due to our extensive pipeline and terminals network."We are pleased to expand our marine storage capabilities to meet the strong industry demand for both domestic and international exports while solidifying our strategic position as a key provider of storage and transportation services in the Gulf Coast region."The new Pasadena terminal is expected to be operational in early 2019, subject to receipt of necessary permits and regulatory approval.
Design and consulting firm Arup has announced the start of construction on the Long Beach Civic Center in California.The new $520M project will include a 25,000sq m City Hall, a 22,000sq m port headquarters, a 9,000sq m main library, underground parking for 469 vehicles, a 7,000sq m civic plaza, and a revamped 4.9-acre Lincoln Park.Plans also include modern residential, retail, and hotel facilities on the current City Hall’s site.Mayor Robert Garcia said: "The new Civic Center will strengthen the connection between City Hall and the community, help revitalize the Downtown core, and generate thousands of jobs.” Arup has been acting as the city's lead advisor on the project since 2013 and has provided comprehensive services integrating financial, commercial, real estate, engineering, and cost consulting while assisting the city with the P3 procurement through the current detailed design and construction phase.The company was able to reduce the planning, entitlement, and procurement process to two years, down from the traditional three-to-five-year period.The project is scheduled to be complete in 2019.
US-based developer Next Century Partners has received $1bn in construction financing for its Century Plaza Hotel redevelopment in Los Angeles, California.The project secured a $446M senior loan from a consortium led by J.P. Morgan Chase, $120M of mezzanine financing from an investment vehicle managed by Colony Capital and $450M of EB-5 financing provided by CMB Export LLC Regional Center.The $2.5bn mixed-use development will feature two 46-storey luxury residential towers, restaurants, retail shops and a new five-star 400-room hotel.The project is expected to commence later this summer and create more than 12,300 construction and permanent jobs.
Madison’s City Council has given the go-ahead to the $170M Judge Doyle Square project in downtown Madison, USA.The redevelopment will cover two downtown blocks that currently house the Madison Municipal Building and the Government East parking garage.The project plans by Beitler Real Estate Services include construction of 354 apartments, retail and office space, and a parking facility. Work will also involve construction of a hotel with 250 rooms.The project is subject to various approvals, such as land use considerations.The project faced many set backs through the years. This started with biotechnology firm Exact Sciences scrapping plans for Judge Doyle Square headquarters. Later, the city received two updated proposals for the Judge Doyle Square project from Beitler Real Estate Services Joint Venture and Vermilion Enterprises, with Beitler finally being selected.Construction on the project is expected to commence in 2017.
French tyre company Michelin has unveiled plans to construct a new €450M production plant in Mexico.The 142,000sq m plant, to be located in León, Guanajuato, will produce high-end tyres for passenger cars and light trucks. The new facility, the group’s 21st in North America and 69th across the world, is expected to manufacture four to five million tyres annually during the initial production phase, ramping up gradually.Michelin Mexico’s director Mike Boggs said: “We’re pleased to strengthen our industrial presence in Mexico, thereby being able to satisfy the needs of North American car manufacturers and motorists looking for high-quality tyres that are perfectly adapted to their usage conditions.”Construction work is set to commence in the second half of 2016 with tyres expected to come off the production line in the fourth quarter of 2018.
The University of Central Florida (UCF) has selected a team to design and construct its new $60M campus in downtown Orlando, Florida.The team — composed by SchenkelShultz Architecture, Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Skanska USA Building — will be responsible for the 15,000sq m academic building, which will be the centrepiece of the new campus.The partnership will also support the renovation of UCF’s existing Center for Emerging Media, which is home to several academic programs.SchenkelShultz Architecture’s president and chief operating officer J. Casino expansion project in Hanover, Maryland.The scope of the work includes the construction of a new 17-storey Live! Hotel tower with 310 luxury guest rooms and an event centre next to Maryland Live! Casino at Arundel Mills, will include a 17-storey Live! Hotel tower with 310 luxury guest rooms. The development will add an additional 33,000sq m of space to the gaming facility and will also involve the construction of an event centre, meeting spaces, new dining options, and a day spa/salon.Tutor Perini Building Corp. will serve as the general contractor in the project.Cordish Global Gaming Group president Robert Norton said: "Maryland Live! A consortium of lenders led by Maybank is set to provide the first syndicated shariah-compliant construction financing worth $219M for the development of a luxury residential tower in Manhattan, New York.Maybank was selected as a joint lead arranger along with Warba Bank of Kuwait for the syndication, which includes lenders Intesa Sanpaolo of Italy and an affiliate of MSD Partners.The funding includes a $174M senior construction loan and a $45M mezzanine loan, which will be used for the construction of the Tribeca condominium tower, a 43-storey building to be developed by Soho Properties and located at 45 Park Place, Manhattan. Maybank group head of global banking Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir said: “This syndication is a milestone being the first shariah-compliant construction financing in New York City, and it reaffirms our ability to offer value-creating Islamic banking solutions for global clients.“As one of Asia's leading banking groups, we have been at the forefront in financing major infrastructure and property development projects across many countries.”Construction on the 665ft-tall glass and steel tower will start in mid-2016 and is set to be complete in 2018.
