The Cordish Companies and Comcast Spectacor, a US-based sports and entertainment company, have unveiled plans to build a next-generation esports and entertainment venue at Philadelphia Sports Complex in Pennsylvania, US. With an investment of around $50m, the new esports arena will be constructed adjacent to the Xfinity Live! dining and entertainment complex in South Philadelphia. Comcast Spectacor-owned Philadelphia Fusion esports franchise, which is one of 20 international teams competing in the Overwatch League, will be the primary tenant of the arena. Featuring 60,000ft² of space, the new purpose-built esports arena will allow to seat up to 3,500 guests. Upon completion, the venue will become the largest new-construction esports arena in the Western Hemisphere. Kansas City-based architectural firm Populous has designed the Fusion Arena. Construction on the project is set to commence this summer. Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO Dave Scott said: “Fusion Arena gives esports fans a best-in-class venue to call home and be proud of. Beyond competitive gaming, it’s a stunning facility that will host a wide array of events.” The arena will be provided with two balcony bars, club seats with USB ports, flexible loge boxes and exclusive suites. Around 10,000ft² of space will be allocated for training facility, broadcast studio and team offices. The industrial materials will be incorporated across the venue to pay tribute to Philadelphia’s manufacturing heritage. It also includes 6,000ft² public entry area, which will comprise of 2,000ft² of interactive media surface hovering 30ft above visitors. In February, the partnership also announced the construction of new class-A office tower, Pattison Place, with an investment of around $80m. The Cordish Companies principal Blake Cordis said: “Fusion Arena will set the gold standard for competitive gaming and debut on one of the country’s most exciting platforms of sports and entertainment amid Philadelphia’s professional sports teams.” Comcast Spectacor is owned by media and technology firm Comcast Corporation. The Cordish Companies develops and operates dining, entertainment and hospitality destinations across the US.
