Construction firm Morgan Sindall has commenced construction work on a £70m project to transform Lambeth’s Town Hall and civic buildings in the UK. Morgan Sindall’s scope of the work will include the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Brixton Town Hall to create a more open and accessible building for residents and local businesses.The project also involves the demolition of some buildings to the rear, reinstatement of the original atrium with a new roof, and the installation of new lifts, doors and windows.Further, it will include basement modifications to offer new office space and upgraded community facilities.In addition, a new energy efficient civic facility is being built with a customer centre and council offices. The new six-storey building will offer 11,000 sq ft of office space.Morgan Sindall is also improving Buckner Road and Porden Road to ease traffic congestion.The work on the project is set to be completed in 2018.
The Georgia Institute of Technology and John Portman & Associates (Portman) have unveiled plans for the Coda collaborative building in Tech Square, Atlanta.Estimated to cost $375m, the 750,000 sq ft mixed-use development is being designed by Portman in order to achieve the primary goal of bringing research and commercialisation together.The development will have 620,000 sq ft of office space, half of which will be occupied by Georgia Tech, and nearly 40,000 sq ft of retail space, including the adaptive reuse of Crum & Forster building, which will become a local gathering place and outdoor living room for Tech Square and Midtown Atlanta.The development will also include an approximately 80,000 sq ft data centre, which Next Tier HD has been selected to operate.Coda will be programmed around high performance computing modelling, simulation and a sustainable innovation ecosystem, integrating the existing assets of Tech Square with new opportunities in interdisciplinary research, commercialisation and sustainability.The project is expected to create 2,100 construction jobs and 2,400 jobs onsite after completion. Portman Holdings’ CEO Ambrish Baisiwala said: "We're excited to develop Coda, encompassing collaborative office space, co-working and research facilities, a high performance computing centre and interactive community space, collectively enhancing the innovation ecosystem created by Georgia Tech and Midtown."
The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Airports Division has broken ground on the new Consolidated Rent-A-Car (Conrac) facility at Kahului Airport, Maui.The cost of the Maui Conrac facility is approximately $340m, which is part of the $2.7bn statewide Modernization Program that is aimed at improving facilities at airports around the state of Hawaii.Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company is the lead contractor of the project and design team is being led by Demattei Wong Architects.Kahului Airport rents an average of 2,200 cars daily. The Conrac will house more than a dozen rental car companies in one location close to the main terminal. The new Conrac will be a three-level structure comprising rental car offices, customer service counters, ‘ready and return’ rental car spaces, and Quick-Turn-Around (QTA) areas with fuel and car wash facilities to service rental car fleets.There will be nearly 3,800 parking stalls for the rental car companies and another 700 dedicated to employee parking.Maui Conrac's new electric tram built on a rail system will eventually be powered by solar energy, which will help the airport reduce its overall carbon footprint. It will also minimise congestion around the airport. The facility will be accessible through a new road that will extend from the Hana Highway to the Airport Loop Road. The facility's decorative feature elements will also serve as an irrigation reservoir with non-potable water for landscaped areas. The reservoir will contain nearly 140,000 gallons of non-potable water that will be filtered to eliminate particles and will prevent clogging the system. This also means more potable water will be available for the community.Maui Conrac will be completed in approximately three and a half years. It will employ more than 200 people on the site and a total industry employment of more than 500 jobs.The project is being exclusively funded by a Customer Facility Charge, which consists of a daily charge of $4.50 to those who rent a car.
Gammon Construction, an equal stake joint venture of Balfour Beatty, has secured a contract worth HKD1.6bn ($206m) from Hysan Development Company to build the Lee Garden Three project in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.The project will involve the construction of 20 levels of Grade A offices sitting atop a five-storey retail podium of shops and a range of food and beverage establishments. It will feature a five-level basement, with about 200 parking lots.Owned and developed by Hysan, Lee Garden Three project will be built on the former site of Sunning Plaza and Sunning Court. It will be part of Hysan’s cluster of commercial buildings in Causeway Bay, fronting Hysan Avenue.The company will use latest construction technologies such as Building Information Modeling, 4D modeling and 3D scanning to enhance the project’s environmental friendliness and construction efficiency.The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2017.Gammon CEO Thomas Ho said: “We are delighted to have been selected by Hysan as the construction partner of this redevelopment project. Linkcity Ile-de-France has signed a construction contract worth about €200m with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) for the construction of the Alto Tower at La Défense, Paris.The company is the property development unit of Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction.Designed by IF Architectes, AltoTower will be 150m tall, and provide 38 floors of office space with total floor space of 51,000 sq m. It will feature glass-scale façade and an unusual flare shape.The surface area of each floor will range from 700 sq m at the foot of the tower to 1,500 sq m at the top. The project will also include a car park, shops and a vast square developed with EPADESA, the development authority of La Défense.The new tower will replace the Les Saisons office building, which leads into the Les Saisons sector. It will form part of the urbanisation of the La Défense ring road and will link the Ancre neighbourhood in Courbevoie with La Défense.The detailed preliminary design is slated to be completed during 2016, with site work to begin in September 2016. The handover is scheduled for the first quarter of 2020. Construction will be undertaken by Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France Construction Privé.Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France CEO Bernard Mounier said: "The award of this contract, following 18 months of technical and engineering studies, repays the motivation and hard work of all the teams."By combining their range of skills, we were able to meet our customer's expectations. Skanska has won a contract from Westchester Medical Center to construct a new ambulatory care pavilion on the existing hospital campus in New York.The contract is valued at about SEK1.2bn ($140m). It will be included in order bookings for Skanska USA Building in the first quarter of 2016.Under the contract, Skanska will construct a 26,000 sq m, eight-storey pavilion. It will feature a new ambulatory operating room suite, an imaging centre, a lobby, physician office space, entry canopy for patient drop-off, and new roof-top mechanical, electrical and plumbing units.Skanska is also responsible for the construction of the interior spaces and the expansion of the existing parking lot.Construction work on the project is scheduled to start in June 2016 and is expected to be completed in September 2018.
VINCI Construction has won a €496m contract to build the new La Défense station and adjacent tunnels.The company was awarded the contract through its subsidiaries VINCI Construction France, VINCI Construction Grands Projets, Dodin Campenon Bernard, Soletanche Bachy France and Botte Fondations, in a joint venture (JV) with Spie Batignolles TPCI and Spie Fondations, The contract, awarded by SNCF Réseau, will involve the construction of a new La Défense station under the CNIT dome and extension of RER line E towards the west of Paris (Eole). Apart from the underground structural work beneath the CNIT itself, the JV will also build 1km of tunnel, a 40m-deep and 15m-diameter shaft and a large number of underground pedestrian corridors enabling connections between the RER E and A lines, the L and U lines of the Transilien and the T2 Tramway.Extending the E line and building the new CNIT-La Défense station is intended to provide commuters with a better quality of service, and connections with other RER lines and the future Grand Paris Express network.The construction work, including the unearthing of 350,000 cubic metres of rubble, will be undertaken without affecting the daily operations of all the CNIT offices, shops and hotel.Work on the project will commence in mid-2016 and will continue for just over five years.The project will create 700 construction jobs at the peak period. It will require 4m hours of labour with more than 300,000 hours that will be carried out under work-integration programmes.
Alabama Senate has passed Governor Robert Bentley's $800m bill to construct four prisons in the state.At present, Alabama prisons have about 24,000 inmates in facilities originally designed for about 13,000. The bill calls for closing 13 of the 15 men's prisons and Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women. The state would build three new men's prisons accommodating 4,000 inmates each, and a new one for women with 1,200 beds. Replacing the old prisons will add about 3,000 beds.The state will borrow the money for construction.Governor Robert Bentley said: "I commend the Senate for taking a bold and decisive step toward prioritizing public safety in our prison system with the construction of four new prisons."The passage of this bill will help reduce overcrowding and will provide safer conditions for corrections officers as well as inmates within the facilities."New facilities will also create greater opportunities to reduce the risk of recidivism."
Developers Ashfield Land and local house builder Kirkwood Homes have submitted plans to Aberdeenshire Council for a new £150m mixed-use development.The site for the proposed construction is located five miles north of Aberdeen. It was allocated for future development in the 2012 Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan (LDP). If approved, the plans will bring to life the Blackdog Masterplan that was approved by the council in 2013, calling for a new town centre with business space and substantial additional housing.Ashfield Land and Kirkwood Homes have been refining the proposals since late 2015, and after detailed consultation with local residents and community representatives.The proposed development will include the construction of a new town centre, with around 600 homes, including 150 affordable homes, to accommodate around 2,100 residents.It will also include offices, industrial accommodation, a regional food hall, a supermarket, a petrol station, a hotel, a cinema, shops, a park and ride facility and also a primary school.Subject to Aberdeenshire Council’s approval, construction will begin in early 2017 and will be delivered in partnership with major stakeholders including Aberdeenshire Council and the local community.The project is expected to create 1,200 jobs during construction and 1,500 full time jobs after completion.
Developer Ballymore has received funding from British property investor M&G Real Estate for the construction of the £200m Three Snowhill development in Birmingham, UK.The office development, which will cover an area of 420,000 sq ft, is due to be the largest ever speculative city centre office project built outside London.The property will feature 385,000 sq ft of office space, 35,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, accommodating nearly 4,000 workers.BAM Construction was appointed as preferred contractor for the project in June 2015. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2018.Ballymore CEO Sean Mulryan said: “Ballymore is delighted to announce a start on the third and final phase of our Snowhill scheme. “Working with the city, our funding partner, M&G Real Estate, and our main contractor, BAM, we will deliver a landmark building and the final element of what is one of the largest and most prestigious commercial developments in central Birmingham.”
Ground has been broken on the first phase of the £400m Kirkstall Forge mixed-use project in Leeds, UK.Located on 57 acres, the development will include 1,050 new homes, 300,000 sq ft of office space, as well as 100,000 sq ft of retail, leisure and community space. Wates will serve as the project’s principal contractor. Phase one of the project will involve the creation of a Grade A office building, covering an area of 110,000 sq ft. The seven-storey building is expected to be ready for occupation in the third quarter of 2017.With the ground breaking, Zenith, a leasing, fleet management and vehicle outsourcing business, has signed a pre-let agreement to occupy a new flagship headquarter office building at the development. Under the deal, the company will occupy over 45,000 sq ft net over the three upper stories that include a roof level meeting room suite.In addition, developer CEG has announced plans to relocate its northern office to the new development. The developer will occupy nearly 10,000 sq ft on the ground floor, with the remaining ground floor and three remaining floors of 18,500 sq ft each to be made available to the market.CEG director Jon Kenny said: “Kirkstall Forge is unique, it will deliver fresh, sustainable new ways of living and working amongst acres of green space in a wooded riverside setting. With schools, contemporary housing, restaurants, cafés and light-filled offices, it will provide the vibrancy of city life as well as the tranquillity of the outdoors.“Ultimately, this will not only be an ambitious and innovative development for Leeds, but will establish a new benchmark for office developments across the rest of the UK.”
Implenia has secured a contract valued at over CHF100m ($101.2m) to construct a new landmark for North Zurich, Switzerland.The company has won the total contractor mandate by making use of digital 4D Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the tender phase. The scope of the contract, awarded by SBB Immobilien, will include the construction of the Andreasturm building. The 80m high building, located next to the railway station in Oerlikon, Zurich, has been designed by architects Gigon/Guyer.The development will include about 20,000 sq m of office space, ample room for shops, cafés and restaurants, and a direct link to the platforms and station underpass. It will also be energy efficient, and will comply with the DGNB Platinum label standards adapted by the Swiss Sustainable Building Council. Construction work on the project is expected to commence in April 2016.
