Dutch chemicals company LyondellBasell has unveiled plans to build a new small-scale molecular recycling facility in Ferrara, Italy. The pilot facility will be equipped to convert post-consumer plastic waste into new plastics, helping to combat the global plastic waste. In collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), LyondellBasell has developed a molecular recycling technology, MoReTec, which uses a catalyst to break down plastic waste into molecules more quickly and efficiently than traditional chemical recycling technologies. The technology aims to convert difficult-to-recycle plastic waste such as multi-layer films into their molecular state for use as feedstock to produce new plastic for various applications, including food contact and healthcare items.LyondellBasell research and development, technology and sustainability senior vice president Jim Seward said: “We have advanced our chemical recycling capabilities over the last 15 months, and through research and testing we are studying a number of LyondellBasell proprietary catalyst options.“In addition to continuing the development of our catalyst options, our investment in a small-scale pilot facility will help us to advance MoReTec technology towards commercial scale in our quest to achieving a true circular economy.”LyondellBasell said that the new facility will complement the company’s existing mechanical recycling activities.Besides constructing the pilot facility at Ferrara, LyondellBasell plans to focus on the interaction of various waste types on the molecular recycling process, catalyst selection, and process conditions in the coming months. In August 2018, LyondellBasell broke ground on the largest propylene oxide (PO) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) plant in the US.The $2.4bn plant will produce one billion pounds (470,000 tonnes) of PO and 2.2 billion pounds (one million tonnes) of TBA annually. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2021.The project will create more than 2,200 jobs at the peak of construction and 160 permanent positions. While PO is used to make bedding, furniture, carpeting, coatings, building materials and adhesives, TBA will be converted to two ether-based oxyfuels – methyl tertiary butyl ether and ethyl tertiary butyl ether.
