Whirlpool to build manufacturing plant in Tennessee
Published: 02-Sep-2010
Whirlpool Corporation, an appliance maker in US, is planning to build a new plant in Tennessee, as a part of its $300 million domestic manufacturing facilities expansion.
Whirlpool had considered sites in Mexico and elsewhere in the US before opting to replace a century-old factory in Cleveland, Tennessee, where it assembles built-in cooking ranges and ovens. It will add 130 staff to an existing work force of 1,500.
The company has undertaken reorganisation on a large scale basis. The $120 million Cleveland project features a 400,000 square feet distribution center and comes alongside a $175 million renovation of a plant in Clyde, Ohio, that will produce a new generation of washing machines.
Whirlpool expects production improvements to occur from the new one million square feet Cleveland plant, which replaces a century-old factory where the company assembles built-in cooking ranges and ovens. This new plant will be laid out for cooking products.
