Viridor submits planning application for AD plant in South London
Published: 08-Mar-2010
Recycling, waste management and renewable energy company, Viridor has submitted a proposal to build an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant, to process food waste at its recycling and landfill site in Beddington Lane, Sutton, in South London.
Viridor had previously submitted a planning application to build a larger AD facility, which would have had capacity to process 75,000 tons of waste per year along with other waste management infrastructure on site, which was resolved for approval by the council's Development Control Committee in April 2008, following a positive recommendation from its planning officers.
The new planning application comes as a result of a fresh assessment of how much waste is likely to be generated by the four boroughs, who form the South London Waste Partnership (Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton) concluded that a smaller facility will cope with demand.
Therefore, Viridor is proposing a flagship facility with annual capacity of 30,000 tons, at an estimated cost of GBP15 million ($23 million). This new facility would help the four boroughs meet their landfill diversion targets and reduce the costs associated with waste disposal.
One of the key by-products of the process is green electricity that will be fed-back from the plant to the national grid. The facility will also produce 11,000 tons of peat-free, nutrient-rich soil conditioner for restoration and landscaping applications.
