The United Arab Emirates (UAE ) has opened the AED6bn ($1.6bn) 89km-long Sharjah-Khorfakkan Road, which spans from Emirates Road to Wadi Shi in Khor Fakkan.

The new Khorfakkan highway has been inaugurated by Sharjah Supreme Council Member and ruler of Sharjah Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, along with Ras Al Khaimah Supreme Council Member and ruler of Ras Al Khaimah Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, and Sharjah Deputy Ruler Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi.

The latest addition to the roads network of Sharjah and the UAE, the new highway links the arterial Emirates Road (E611) in Sharjah with Wadi Shi Square in Khorfakkan.

The highway, which passes through deserts, plains, and mountains, comprises 14 intersections, and seven underground crossings including five pairs of tunnels dug through high mountains.

The tunnels include the 2,700m Al Sidra Tunnel, which is claimed to be the longest covered mountain tunnel in the Middle East.

Other tunnels include the 1,300m Al Rough Tunnel, 900m Al Ghazir Tunnel, 300m Al Saha Tunnel, and 1,300m Al Saqb Tunnel.

Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) chairman Yusuf Saleh Al Suwaiji was reported by Construction Week Online as saying: “The safety of the road has been ensured through the central metal barriers that prevent sand dunes, along with a high-level safety fence on both sides of the road to prevent the entry of astray camels and animals, in addition to forestation, and fully equipped with street lighting.”

Expected to reduce 45 minutes of travel time between the two cities, the new road project forms part of modern road network marking a new phase in the development of the infrastructure and tourist facilities in the East Coast city.

Additionally, Qasimi had laid the foundation stone for the branch of Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Khorfakkan and also inaugurated the Resistance Monument, which bears a historical and symbolic significance for the city's authentic heritage.
