Turner begins work to refurbish Garfield Senior High School auditorium in US
1 August 2011US-based Turner Construction Company has commenced construction work to refurbish Garfield Senior High School's auditorium in the US state of Virginia.
The auditorium was damaged by a fire in 2007. The $40 million renovation project will provide new state-of-the-art facilities featuring architectural elements from the historic 1924 building. The new facility will be a central place for awards ceremonies, plays, and meetings for thousands of students and the community. The Garfield Senior High School renovation includes a new 1,400-seat performing arts auditorium, a three-story classroom building, and an administration building. The new facilities will feature 15 modern classrooms, administrative offices, and a black box theatre. The scope of work includes renovation to a student plaza which will be dedicated to the school's late math teacher, Jaime Escalante. A central part of the student plaza project will feature four public art components. Construction work is anticipated to be completed in 2013.
