US-based Tennoca Construction Company has secured a $9.3 million contract from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to widen and align 3.7 miles of Howard Gap Road in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Under the contract, Howard Gap will be widened from Jackson Road in Fletcher to just south of Brookside Camp Road in Henderson County. When completed, the entire Howard Gap Road widening will stretch about seven miles to the US.

The contract also includes widening the northern section of Howard Gap Road to two 12-feet lanes with paved shoulders, constructing a bike lane, adding turn lanes at several intersections, replacing the bridge over Byers Creek and constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Brookside Camp Road and Howard Gap Road.

According to department, work can begin as early as 27 August and scheduled to open by 30 June 2015.

NCDOT has awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 9.5%, or $12.6 million, below the department estimates.
