Austrian construction firm PORR has secured a contract worth €290m (£253m) to upgrade a section of a key rail line no. 131 in Poland.

The contract, awarded by Polish railway infrastructure manager PKP PLK, will be the company’s largest railway construction contract to date in the country.

The Austrian construction firm will execute the contract in collaboration with Trakcja System, which is responsible for the catenary works.

The scope of the work will include the replacement of the 135km of track and 148 sets of switches on the approximately 71km-long stretch between Kalina and Rusiec Łódzki.

It will also include the refurbishment of the overall control and safety system along with the catenary and 17 level crossings.

The construction firm said that all of the stations will feature new platforms providing disabled access.

The scope of the work will also involve the renovation of 71 civil structures, including many larger viaducts like the almost 100m-long section over the River Warta.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “First built in the 20th century, the railway line no. 131 is not only essential for passenger transport, but especially for freight.

“It links the industrial region of Upper Silesia with the ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia on the Baltic Sea. We are proud to realise our largest railway construction order in Poland to date in the form of this design & build project.”

Following the signing of the contract, work on the plans for upgrading the section (Lot C) will commence immediately. Meanwhile, the designs are expected to be ready within three months.

PORR said that all required permits and approvals are expected to be received within 13 months. The construction firm has committed to complete all contractual obligations by May 2023.

The latest project represents PORR’s 35th construction contract with PKP PLK. Both firms have started working on railway construction in Poland in 2011.
