New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has unveiled plans for a new $105m (£83.8m) full-time train station in Elmont, New York in the US.

The new Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) station, which is touted to be the first new full-time LIRR station in nearly 50 years, will be located between the Queens Village and Bellerose stations, just east of the Cross Island Parkway.

Intended to help reduce traffic and provide new amenity to the Elmont community, the station will be built as a part of the $1.26bn (£958.3m) Belmont Park Redevelopment Project.

Cuomo said: "The Belmont project will help drive the region's economy forward while building the Islanders a state-of-the-art facility at home on Long Island, creating thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in economic output along the way.

"Now with the addition of the first full-time LIRR train station in almost 50 years, we will provide millions of visitors and fans a fast and affordable way to get there and continue New York's nation-leading investments in 21st century transportation infrastructure."

New York Arena Partners, the developers of the Belmont Park Redevelopment Project, will provide $97m (£77.4m) for the construction of the train station, while the remaining $8m (£6.3m) will be funded by the State.

LIRR president Phillip Eng said: "This new station will allow us to provide direct service to Belmont from Long Island as well as from New York City with trains traveling on our Main Line, which is being expanded to a third track for greater service reliability and flexibility.”

The new station is expected to provide direct service to Belmont Park from both the east and west.

The new train station project will also include upgrades to the existing LIRR Belmont spur, including installation of automated track switches.

The redevelopment of Belmont Park will transform the Long Island site into the new home of the New York Islanders. It will include a 435,000ft² retail and entertainment complex and a new hotel.
