US-based design firm SVA Architects has announced the groundbreaking of Jordan Downs Phase 1A in Watts, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California.
The entire project, valued at $1bn, is being developed by BRIDGE Housing and The Michaels Organization.
Located on 3.15-acre site, Phase 1A will feature 115 rental apartments in 12 buildings, and is designed to meet LEED Silver Certification standards.
Upon completion, the overall project will offer nearly 1,410 affordable and market-rate homes. It will feature public amenities including a new community and recreation centre, 160,000 sq ft of retail space, nine acres of green space and new neighbourhood programmes.
BRIDGE Housing executive vice president Kimberly McKay said: "Our experience with large-scale public housing revitalization demonstrates how we can enrich the fabric of communities, make wise use of land, and pair stable homes with the services people need to thrive and grow."
SVA Architects CEO Ernesto Vasquez said: "It is truly an honor to be part of such a significant - and long overdue - project for the City of LA. Where deterioration and devastation once reigned, a thriving and sustainable community will emerge. We are pleased to collaborate with design firm, Mithun | Solomon to deliver such a transformative project."
