Swedish construction and civil engineering company Peab has secured a NOK784m ($88.3m) contract from Nye Veier for the extension of E6 between Kvål and Melhus in Norway.

Under the contract, Peab will be responsible for the construction and maintenance of the new section of highway on E6 near Trondheim.

The project includes the construction of new roads with a 7km stretch between Kvål-Melhus along with four lanes.

It also involves the construction of five new bridges, on-ramps and off-ramps along with an ecoduct and commuter parking.

The project is claimed to be the first road project that will be implemented as Integrated Project Delivery (IPL), which is a special form in Norwegian road construction.

Nye Veier has chosen Peab as contractor and Cowi as a consultant for the project.

Peab region manager Johan Hansson said: “We are now starting up the second phase of this project. Construction of the new section of highway increases traffic safety and passability, and we will reduce travel time as well. Naturally we are pleased to be part of this development.”

Work on the project is divided into two phases of which the first phase has already begun in the spring of last year.

The work on the first phase comprises plan and calculation of a target price for the project, along with optimising.

Nye Veier project manager Johan Arnt Vatnan said: “Almost a year has passed since we started the three-party contract for the development and optimization of the project together with Peab and Cowi. It has been a developing and educational process.”
Construction of the project is estimated to be completed in mid-2022.

In June last year, Peab started construction on a new flyover on E6 in Moelv, between Hamar and Lillehammer in Norway.

The project involves the construction of approximately 1.1km of new highway along with on and off-ramps, as well as a 70m-long highway bridge, two roundabouts and commuter parking.
