Network Rail announces £800m contracts for rail haulage, seasonal services

Network Rail, the owner and infrastructure manager of railway network in Great Britain, has awarded contracts worth £800m for the haulage and operations of engineering trains and seasonal treatment services in Control Period 6 (CP6, 2019-2024).

Freightliner, GB Railfreight, Direct Rail Services, DB Cargo UK and Colas Rail UK have secured the rail haulage contracts, which include network, bulk ballast and possession engineering trains.

Under the terms of the contracts, DB Cargo UK, GB Railfreight and Freightliner will also operate Network Rail’s supply chain operations local distribution centres in CP6 to improve facilities and safety for better working practices and performance.

Balfour Beatty and DB Cargo UK will provide the weedspray and autumn/winter multipurpose (MPV) services as part of the seasonal services contracts in CP6.

DB Cargo UK, Direct Rail Services, Colas Rail UK, GB Railfreight and Freightliner will operate the rail head treatment train (RHTT) autumn services.

While GB Railfreight will operate the snow and ice treatment trains (SITT), Direct Rail Services will operate the winter development train.

The new contracts are expected to drive improvements in performance and delivery for more reliable services for passengers and freight.

The haulage and seasonal services contracts are divided into eight lots.

Lot 1 haulage involves network, bulk ballast and possession trains, which will e handled by Freightliner, GB Railfreight, Direct Rail Services, DB Cargo UK and Colas Rail UK.

Lot 2 operations at local distribution centres will be handled by DB Cargo UK (Millerhill, Carlisle, Doncaster, Toton, Hinksey, Westbury and Hoo), GB Railfreight (Bescot, Whitemoor and Eastleigh) and Freightliner (Crewe).

Lot 3 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) weedspray treatment and Lot 4 MPV autumn and winter treatment will be taken up by Balfour Beatty and DB Cargo UK.

Lot 5 rail head treatment train for autumn treatment will be carried out by DB Cargo UK, Direct Rail Services, Colas Rail UK, GB Railfreight and Freightliner.

Lot 6 involving snow and ice treatment train for winter treatment will be handled by GB Railfreight; Lot 7 winter development train for winter treatment by Direct Rail Services; and Lot 8 snow ploughs, route proving and ice breaking for winter treatment by Direct Rail Services.
