MSKCC Breast Center and Imaging Center wins Lester Dundes Award

12 July 2010

The Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and MSKCC Imaging Center in New York has been honored by International Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) New York Chapter with Lester Dundes Award in the healthcare category.

Designed by New York office of architectural practice Perkins Eastman, the new 16-story, 237,000 square feet patient-centered ambulatory care facility displays a unique design that emphasizes the patient experience within a hospitality-like setting. Interiors bathed in natural light help in minimizing stress and promote calm and comfort. Perkins Eastman has created inviting spaces with extensive use of wood and fabric. The color palette of peach and subdued green addresses the unique emotional and self image needs of patients. A vast art collection further enhances the space including more than 450 pieces of original artwork. The MSKCC and MSKCC Imaging Center won the award on June 24, 2010. Judges commended the scheme for its human approach offering a warm user and patient experience. The facility has been described by the jury as ‘inviting and comfortable without looking dated.’ The project was completed as a collaboration between Perkins Eastman and MSKCC’s clinicians and Design + Construction Department. Consultants included Stantec Consulting, Jeffery Berman Architects, AKF Engineers, Robert Silman Associates, and Branston Partnership among others. The project has also been honored with several other awards including a highly commended honor from Design & Health International Academy Awards and ‘Best of 2009 Award’ from New York Construction Magazine. IIDA is an international professional networking and educational association with over 13,000 members. IIDA New York established the annual Lester Dundes Awards in 2004 to honor the memory of Lester Dundes, the legendary Interior Design publisher and founder of Interior Design’s Hall of Fame, who passed away in 2004.
