Michigan Humane Society receives funds for new animal shelter
12 January 2011Retired investment banker Thomas Mackey has donated $1 million to the Michigan Humane Society for the construction of animal shelter in Michigan, US.
The Humane Society will construct an animal shelter and care center on 4 acres of land along the southbound I-75 service drive between Holbrook and Clay. The new animal center will have an area of 20,000 to 30,000 square feet, which will include an adoption center, veterinary center, animal shelter, a minimal set of offices and a dog park for animals in the shelter as well as those in nearby neighborhoods. Once the building is complete, the Humane Society will be consolidating its operations from its current Detroit location. The Humane Society may relocate its administrative offices from Southfield to the new site. The new animal shelter site was the home of the Detroit Public Schools' Sherrard Elementary and another school, both of which have been torn down. The Humane Society plans to delay construction of the animal care center for at least 18 months to complete planning and continue with a $6 million capital campaign which was launched in October 2010 to fund the first phase of the project.
