A consortium of McConnell Dowell Constructors, Mott MacDonald Australia, Arup Group has won a contract for the A$354m (£197m) Regency Road to Pym Street project as part of the North-South Corridor, in Adelaide, South Australia.

The consortium will collaborate with Bardavcol on the design and construction of the new 1.8km motorway along South Road.

The new motorway will connect the South Road Superway to the Torrens Road to River Torrens project terminating north of Torrens Road.

Construction of the new motorway will create a 47km non-stop motorway between Gawler and the River Torrens.

The Australian and the South Australian governments have jointly committed A$354m (£197m) for the project.

The project includes an at-grade motorway from the existing infrastructure to the north (South Road Superway); an overpass at Regency Road; and an at-grade motorway from Regency Road to Pym Street, joining the lowered motorway infrastructure (Torrens Road to River Torrens project).

The design of the project includes three lanes in each direction over the 1.8km motorway; two lanes in each direction on the South Road surface road; and Regency Road overpass with three lanes in each direction and two lanes in each direction on the roads under the overpass.

The project also provides left in and left out access at Pym Street; full access to the non-stop motorway at Regency Road; cycling and pedestrian facilities; grade separated pedestrian and cycle overpass over South Road near Pym Street; and landscaping and noise barriers.

It also involves upgrade of the intersection at Regency Road.

Site investigations, utility service design and relocations, property acquisition and stakeholder engagement have already commenced.

Main construction works are expected to commence later in 2019. The project is expected to be completed in 2022.

Once complete, the project is expected to save travel time of up to eight minutes during peak periods on South Road between Regency Road and Pym Street.
