L&T Construction JV wins significant contract for desalination plant in India

A joint venture of L&T Construction’s Water and Effluent Treatment Business and UAE firm Tecton Engineering & Construction has won a significant EPC contract from Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) for a 100MLD desalination plant in the State of Gujarat.

The project is intended to provide desalinated water to the Petroleum, Chemicals & Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) in Dahej district.

Work includes the design, construction, commissioning of sea water intake structure, pump house, HDPE conveyance pipeline, raw water storage reservoir, sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant of 100MLD output, marine outfall system as well as associated electrical, mechanical and instrumentation works.

The project also involves automation, such as online measurements and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for controlling the desalination plant.

The joint venture company will also operate and maintain the plant for 10 years after completion.

Previously, L&T Construction won orders from clients in various Indian states across business units.

The Power Transmission and Distribution business has secured orders for urban electricity distribution from a state distribution utility.

The scope of work includes replacement of HT and LT overhead lines with underground cables, as well as the creation of new 11kV feeders for load bifurcation, to improve the reliability of the power distribution network.

The business has secured another order from a state transmission utility for turnkey construction of 400kV and 220kV transmission lines.

The business unit has also won an order for the supply, installation and commissioning of 132kV underground cables in the UAE.

It has received orders in Ethiopia and Uganda for medium/low voltage distribution lines and last-mile consumer connections to improve electricity access in towns and rural areas.

The business, in a consortium, has won an order for the supply and construction of Battery Energy Storage Systems for 115kV substations in Chaiyaphum and Lopburi provinces of Thailand.

L&T Construction’s Defence business unit of Heavy Civil Infrastructure has won an order from a Defence PSU for the construction of a strategic project for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Work includes construction of underground specialised RCC structure, along with water proofing, electrical works and other internal and external services. The project is to be completed within 33 months.

The company’s Water and Effluent Treatment business has secured EPC orders from the Gujarat Water Infrastructure for supplying, lowering, laying, jointing, testing and commissioning of an MS pipeline from Brahmani Dam-2 to Chakampar village (Package II) and from Chakampar village to Nava Sadulka (Package III) in Morbi district, Gujarat.

The contract includes operation and maintenance of the infrastructure for five years.

The company classifies its projects under four categories. Significant contracts are worth INR10bn ($145m) to INR25bn ($363m), large contracts are valued between INR25bn ($363m) and INR50bn ($725m), major contracts are worth INR50bn ($725m) to INR70bn ($1bn), and contracts under mega classification are worth more than INR70bn ($1bn).
