26 October 2012

UK-based construction company, Kier Group plc, has secured a £10 million ($15.9 million) contract for the expansion of the London Southend Airport terminal in London, UK.

The project involves expansion of the terminal building to reach a length of 90m.

The expanded building will house larger check in desks/baggage drop-off points, more number of security check points, an enlarged departure lounge and an expanded arrivals area with enhanced baggage reclaim facilities apart from a big immigration area.

The terminal expansion project has been staged in three phases. Phase I involved the development of a light and airy, fly-through terminal that became operational in February 2012. The Phase II involves making the terminal fully equipped to meet the project surge in passenger traffic of about two million per year by 2020.

The construction is scheduled to commence in November 2012 and the entire project is scheduled for a wrap up by the end of 2013.

The company anticipates delivering the new arrival facility by May 2013. The expansion of the terminal will create 300 additional jobs in the region.
