UK-based healthcare services company International Hospitals Group (IHG) has been selected for the construction of three hospitals in Oman.

The three hospitals – Salalah, Suwaiq and Khasab – will provide intensive care, emergency services and specialist baby care.
The project has secured £500m in financing from the UK government’s UK Export Finance (UKEF).

UKEF is the UK’s export credit agency and a government department, which is working along with the Department for International Trade as an integral part of its strategy and operations.

The UK government said that the financing helped IHG to win the contract and had also provided a loan and repayable on a commercial basis.

It added that the new projects are expected to support jobs in the UK during the construction phase, by drawing expertise of the UK supply chain along with the supply of specialist knowledge and medical equipment.

Under the contract, IHG will be responsible for the full design, construction and services for all three hospitals.

IHG will also construct emergency power systems, maintenance facilities, roads and other associated infrastructure.

Headquartered in Denham, Buckinghamshire, IHG has partnered with the University of Cambridge, the United Nations and the World Bank to provide global health care projects across the world.

British international trade secretary Liz Truss said: “The size of this contract demonstrates the appetite for the UK’s world-leading healthcare expertise across the globe.

“I am delighted UK Export Finance is supporting the construction of these three hospitals which will not only improve healthcare provision in Oman but will also expand IHG’s overseas business.”

In May 2019, IHG broke ground on a 200-bed general hospital in Hangzhou, China.

The hospital comprises a wing of 14 VIP suites, 60 spacious single bedrooms, 70 double bedrooms, eight LDR delivery rooms, 19 post-partum rehab rooms, six operating rooms.

It also includes one hybrid operating room, a radiotherapy vault and accelerator, catheterisation lab, endoscopy centre, a telemedicine centre, and radiology and laboratory diagnostics equipment.
