Indianapolisheadquartered Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives (IEA) has secured a $98m (£80.6m) contract from EDF Renewables North America for the 300MW Milligan 1 wind farm, located near Nebraska’s capital city of Lincoln.

The wind farm will include 99 turbines and will be a combination of Vestas V110, Siemens 129 and 145 turbines. Energy generated from the wind farm will be sufficient to power 115,000 homes and it will be delivered into the Southwest Power Pool electrical grid.

The scope of IEA’s work at the Milligan 1 wind farm includes engineering and construction of the turbine foundations, turbine access roads, MV collection system, wind turbine installation and construction of the on-site operations and maintenance building.

Work on the Milligan 1 project is scheduled to begin in September 2019 and is expected to be fully operational by next November.

Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives CEO JP Roehm said: “This significant new project in Nebraska is indicative of the ongoing strong demand for wind power that we are experiencing this year.”

EDF Renewables North America, the owner and developer of the project, will invest more than $400m (£329m) in the project. It will include more than 150 area landowners. Nearly 200 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase.

Once operational, an estimated $100m in property tax will be paid throughout the life of the project and lease payments to the participating landowners will also inject additional income into the local community.

In January 2019, EDF acquired the wind project from York Nebraska Wind Partners, a partnership comprising Aksamit Resource Management and York Capital Management. EDF also stated that it will sell the generated electricity and Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) into the Southwest Power Pool. The wind farm is also EDF’s first project in Nebraska.

Recently, IEA won a similar contract from Apex Clean Energy to build the 300MW Neosho Ridge Wind project located in Neosho County, Kansas. Powered by 139 Vestas turbines, it will generate enough electricity to power 100,000 homes.
