6 August 2012

A consortium including Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has secured a QAR1.5 billion ($412 million) contract for a new people mover system in Doha’s Education City in Qatar.

HLG said that, the contract for Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), involves the design, construction, installation, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of the project.

HLG (operating as Leighton Contracting Qatar WLL) is part of the Siemens Tram Consortium with Siemens WLL Doha and Siemens AG from Germany. HLG's component of the project is worth QAR450 million ($124 million).

HLG's scope of work includes design and construction of track-work, plus tram stops, and a depot facility. The People Mover System project will commence on 16 May 2012 and be completed in September 2015.

The project will be the first operating rail transport system in Qatar and represents the start of the country's $35 billion investment in rail infrastructure over the next 10 years as part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The People Mover System has been designed to reduce traffic flows around Education City by encouraging students to park in multi-storey car parks and then travel for free on the battery-powered tram system around the campus.
