Ground broken on Wavegarden Cove surf lagoon in South Korea

Wavegarden has started civil work on the Wavegarden Cove surfing lagoon in Turtle Island, Siheung in the Gyeonggi province of South Korea.

Upon completion in 2020, the project is expected to become the largest man-made surf park in the world.

The Wavegarden Cove surfing lagoon, which will be the centrepiece of the €2.1bn mixed-use development, is capable of producing up to 1,000 ocean-like waves per hour, across a range of different surfing areas.

Each area will offer waves of different size and power designed for everyone, from professional surfers to newcomers.

Apart from riding waves, Turtle Island will also offer other aquatic activities such as kayaking, SUP and swimming in zones with and without waves.

Business stage 1 will see the creation of Wavegarden Cove on a site covering 166,613m². In stage 2 of the development, Daewon Plus Group, the investors of the wave park, will invest about €430m to build a hotel, a convention centre, marina, and ferris wheel.

With the construction of the park, Siheung, a city previously known for its industrial manufacturing business, is expected to transform into a tourists’ place of interest, anticipating about two million visitors per year.

The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by the Wave Park director Choi Sam-seob, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung, Siheung City mayor Lim Byoung-taek, Korea Water Resources president Lee Hak-soo and Wavegarden chief commercial officer Fernando Odriozola.

Fernando Odriozola said: “As could be expected, the ceremony was amazing.

“Our hosts are really embracing the sport of surfing and we’re confident that this Wavegarden project will become a mecca for surfing, not just for Koreans, but also for people throughout Asia.”

In February, Wavegarden signed a contract to build the surf park.

The project announcement was made after signing a contract last November between Wavegarden and Daewon Plus Construction, South Korean real estate and theme park developer.
