Ground broken on $338m sports and entertainment arena in Texas, US

The University of Texas at Austin, Oak View Group (OVG), C3 Presents, Live Nation Entertainment and Matthew McConaughey Partner have broken ground on $338m sports and entertainment arena, named Moody Center, in Austin, Texas.

The new 15,000-seat privately financed sports and entertainment arena will replace the 42-year-old Frank C. Erwin Jr. Center at the University of Texas’ Austin campus.

Live Nation Entertainment and C3 Presents will jointly work to bring top tours and premium live events to the Moody Center, which is will be built on land that is fully owned by the university.

The multi-purpose arena is scheduled to be opened in 2022 and is expected to create thousands of jobs for the community.

Oak View Group CEO Tim Leiweke said: "This partnership has brought together one of the most recognized universities and brands, the Longhorns, with the world's leader in content, Live Nation, and the world's largest developer of new arenas, OVG, with Matthew McConaughey. Those partners will create one of the greatest arenas in the world and become the heart and soul for the campus and Austin."

Matthew McConaughey, who signed on as Minister of Culture of the Moody Center, will work on ideas such as suite designs, bar placement, colour schemes, among others for the new sports and entertainment arena.

C3 Presents partner Charles Attal said: “Being a fourth-generation Austinite, I grew up in the Frank Erwin Center and have hundreds of memories with my family and friends. It is an honor to work on this new world-class event center for the next generation to enjoy.”

Live Nation Entertainment chairman and CEO Michael Rapino said: "The Moody Center will be a must-play arena and we look forward to bringing our concerts and tours there as soon as the doors open in 2022.”

In the past two years, OVG announced the development of venues in Seattle, Palm Springs, Belmont Park in Elmont New York, Manchester UK, and the new 2026 Winter Olympic Games venue in Milan.
